So (r/humblebrag) I just got a brand new Honda Fit. It's fucking shiny and blue and awesome and I want to keep it that way.

However, living in Minnesota comes with its downsides. Namely the snow for 5-6 months of the year. See, it's not the actual snowing process that is the problem, but what comes afterwards; once the snow stops, the roads and parking lots become covered in slush, as well as salt from the road. It all kicks up as you drive and makes a car wash last about 2-3 seconds (a.k.a exiting the wash onto the wet and slushy parking lot) before getting dirty again.

Rudimentary research says once a week is about good, but I was wondering if it's bad to wash it a little more often? Like twice a week? (just during winter when it's gross)

What about brushes? The BP car wash I go to has the spinny brushes. I worry that they might inadvertently scratch somehow? I mean I'm sure they're designed specifically not to scratch or leave marks, but I'm just paranoid. Alternatively, a touchless car wash, I've been told, isn't as good as removing dirt.

Also the car washes are $8, $9, and $11. I've been splurging to treat the car well and get the $11 one because I want to keep it pretty. However, is it possible that too much of something (whatever the options are - it's like these: https://imgur.com/a/K3VKR ) -- the tri-color wax I know is there. Is that once/twice a week too much? Should I alternate between like the $11 and the $8 every time or something?

I dunno. All general tips, rules of thumb, etc. are appreciated.

Hand wash.

Automatic ones will not get anywhere near as thorough and also WILL leave those weird swirl scratches.

I don't have anywhere to do that, unfortunately. Live in an apartment complex with no hose or anything.

What do you mean by weird swirl scratches?

Minnesotan here. Wash when you can in winter, like today. I do one deluxe wash and then just the basic wash for awhile. As you said, it stays clean for less than a minute.

Should I wash it at lunch or wait until the afternoon? High of like 40+ today with sun, wonder if I should wait until the afternoon when a good chunk of the snow is melted

It's not going to matter much, the road spray will still kick up. If the BP is close to your apt, do it later.

Bragging about a Honda Fit. Cute.

Anyway, although it's more convenient to use automatic machines, those tend to leave swirl marks in the paint/clear coat. As the old saying goes, if you want something done, then do it yourself. Preferably in an area where you can get some shade and be sure to clean up any water spots.

No touch when you use a machine.
But you can also (from what I hear, I'm Washington state born ad raised) put a sprinkler under your car for 10-15 minutes when you get home to get all salt off each day.

Put splash guards on if you are concerned with slush. I put them on my car because I got sick of getting dirty right after a car wash. My car is white too

The automatic ones that touch your car can leave swirls because of its contact.

The automatic touchless car washes dont clean well enough if your car hasnt been cleaned in over a week.

I prefer selfwash at them carwashes. Try not to put added pressure on the soap brush. Like I do enough to soap my car and let the pressure wash rinse it all.

Also, like to wash my car in the rain. Put a little bit of car wash soap on a wash cloth and wash my car with soap. I start from the top of the car. Then move to the windows. And last, hit the body. If its raining good, i get more soap and clean the surface of the rims. After you done washing The car, the soap should be nearly rinsed out from the rain. Car is supercleaned with rain. If theres too much soap or it stopped raining, you have to wipe off the soap as that can leave soapy residue left over.

My town has places where you can hand wash, with a soap-dispensing hose with many different modes including drying I think.

I think there is one pretty close to me. I generally do it at lunch because it kills time at work and isn't far.

There is a Super America literally across the street from my apartment, but I (somehow) don't know if it has a car wash. If it does, then I'll be able to go like 5mph back to avoid too much splashing.

What is proper technique for hand-washing? Not that I know for sure if I'll ever be able to, considering my apartment setup, but it's worth knowing.

I went with ones that are specific for my car, they dont look too bad actually and blend in well enough. So far they work really well in stopping splash marks

Make sure you get your undercarriage washed if you go through an automatic wash. I had a Honda Civic once and the salt rusted out my gas tank. It was like 650 to get a new one
