He was trained by Dooku. He says that in the movie in straightforward Lucas fashion.

The real question is why Palpatine chose to use a lightsaber at all. He had all this dark force energy at his fingertips yet he uses a standard "Jedi weapon" to defend himself.

I thought it was canon that only Jedi use lightsabers, which is why Vader is a dark Jedi and also a sith. Dooku taught Grievous how to use lightsabers. I would imagine Plageus only taught Palp how to do stuff with the force

It's pretty apparent in the movie that Palpatine couldn't have won his fight against either of his opponents without a lightsaber.

That's just poor writing. Realistically, Palpatine should have been able to incinerate Windu on the spot and have a force-off with Yoda, which they ended up doing anyway. They just threw in lightsabers for the cool visuals.

Not after the prequels I guess. In Return of the Jedi, Palpatine referred to Luke's lightsaber as a Jedi weapon with disdain, as if the concept of a material weapon was beneath him.

Yeah but one could say that was just a sign of a pretentious demigod mentality. Why even wield a weapon when he has his slave Vader do the dirty work for him. It's also possible that in the 20 or so years since he exterminated all the Jedi he may have abandoned his lightsaber being that it was no longer a necessity to him.

Or... Lucas had him use lightsabers because the target audience of Star Wars starts drooling at the sight of twirling, flashing lightsaber fights, and he cared more about that than about any sort of consistency.

No, but if all you've ever watched was the OT it might seem that way. In RotJ, the way Palpatine says "Ah yes, a jedi's weapon" when looking at Luke's lightsaber might give that impression.

Did you complain about Sith using sabers in KOTOR or any other EU bs?

He can be disdainful of lightsabers and still be willing to use one when needed. That's not inconsistency, that's perfectly in line with his character. I mean, if he just plain despised lightsabers and would never be caught dead using one, why would he let Vader continue using one, let alone right in front of him?
Yes the prequels are garbage and were obviously Lucas making shit up as he went, but this is like the smallest issue you could possibly take with them.

It's not like it keeps me up at night, I'm responding in a topic specifically about it.
And I'm not saying that it's inconsistent with his character per se, rather that it's inconsistent with the universe Lucas built in the OT. In that universe, the lightsaber is a symbol for the Jedi. The PT unravels that, because all of a sudden there's these guys called Sith who also use lightsabers because the fans thought lightsaber duels were cool.

I'm not even sure that's true, honestly. Even exclusively within the context of the OT Palpatine would have had to have provided Vader with his lightsaber, so it can't be some exclusively Jedi thing.

...I dont see the problem...
The lightsaber is a symbol for the Jedi because 98% of the people in the galaxy have heard stories of Jedis using lightsbers and none of them have seen a non-Jedi use one.
And in the OT, they seem to have been forgotten and turned into fairy tales.

i like to think that the emperor engaged Mace in a lightsaber duel as opposed to a force battle because he knew Mace was a stronger duelist and his own defeat at Mace's hands would look much better from that angle to anakin

I believe canon version is Palpatine could have taken Windu by surprise and won the fight but intentionally chose to confront him head on knowing he was at a huge disadvantage because he needed Anakin to convert.
