Shitty "advice" like this just makes those that suffer from depression feel even worse. Depression doesn't work like that, it's not something that just goes away. These people aren't miserable because they choose to be, and that's all you're implying with these sorts of ignorant statements.

Not really. I live in Middle of Nowhere Vermont with fairly unreliable transportation, and I don't know a great deal about anime. Doesn't seem like a realistic option.

Ugh.

That's what depression is on a superficial level. It can (and probably does 90% of the time) have reasons for it based on lifestyle. We know that some people get depressed by it simply being winter (seasonal affective disorder) so it stands to reason that other life circumstances can be responsible. Stuff like staying up til 4am every night, sleeping during the day, fragmented sleep, shitty diet, highly repetitive daily schedules, reclusive habits, never getting any sunlight, etc. I think this is pretty obvious considering the relatively lower-than-expected efficacy of antidepressants. If you treat it like it's purely a chemical imbalance and try to level it out with drugs and literally doing nothing else differently, it's like an emotional Band-Aid.

OK I thought the topic was dumb but this is even dumber.

It's that easy. You walk outside you say hi to someone. Where do you live that there is no one around you for 200 miles?

Yes and no. This is reversing symptoms and cause.

The symptomatology of depression includes things like sleep dysregulation, diet changes, apathy/social withdrawnness, low energy/sluggish, etc.

So telling someone to make those lifestyle changes is essentially telling someone, "Hey! You! Stop experiencing symptoms!" ArchiePeck's example is actually a good one, because it would be like telling a diabetic to stop peeing so much and to stop being so thirsty all the time to improve their diabetes.

The lifestyle changes you recommended are the goals of treatment. Because it's precisely the symptoms that make depression so difficult to treat. Antidepressants aren't "happy pills", they just lift some of the burden of that inexplicable "heaviness" of depression that makes people sleep poorly, eat poorly, sluggish, and lack the motivation to do things in life. So once you're on them, you're able to then resume the activities in life one finds enjoyable. They won't help if you don't make use of that new-found willpower, but it's a bit naive in thinking a person going through depression will be able to actually commit to those lifestyle changes. It's the symptom, not the cause.

They feed into each other, and it's more like depression amplifies its own causes.

No, if I'm lonely I'll go out and "meet people". Depression is pretty complicated. Socializing is healthy but it's pretty hard if you've never had friends.

- No drinking ( I find club people to be quite toxic, more trouble than it's worth 9/10 times).
- No weird clubs (anime and gaming stuff around here is far too serious.)
- Who the he'll wants to talk during a bus ride or doing errands?
- Fox only
- No items
- Final destination
