I get depressed sometimes, but mostly because I feel like I work too much and I dont live my life how I want to.

I would be a lot more happy if I just had unlimited free time to learn new things and grow as an individual.

There's sadness, and there's the miasmic black hole that is actual depression brought on by fucked up brain chemistry. One you can tune out and cheer yourself up. The other is like a physical sickness that eats at your very soul.

Not to be that guy, but I understand what clinical depression is because it runs in my family and Ive been diagnosed myself. I wont go into details about my personal life due to concerns about privacy and revealing my identity, but I understand wheat youre talking about.

One of the things that I wish that I could do if I had more free time would be simply to buy some canvases and paint and just make works of art. I suppose I could do that on the weekends if I really wanted to use my limited time on that activity, but I often find myself using my free time for things that are more important in the short term.

Motivation doesn't come from nowhere, unless you're genuinely interested in something, like your art that you mentioned in your last post. Then that would be an autotelic hobby of yours, you find motivation in art just by doing it. For most other people, they need a reason to get into something and to consistently do it. I only started learning Japanese recently because I want to go Japan in 2 years.

I wonder how many NEETs aspire to be NEETs vs those who are regrettably there due to circumstances. Reddit NEETs seem like its about 2/3 want to be NEETs, 1/3 hate it and want to change but don't know how.

If they were that motivated they wouldn't be a NEET to begin with? That, and many of them are shouldered with the burden of developmental disorders and mental illness.

Whats the point of living in an unhappy state? If you have unlimited time, I dont see any reason why you wouldnt want to learn something new.

If I had the freedom of waking up every day knowing that nobody had the power to tell me to do something for 12 hours straight, my opportunities would be limitless.

Painting would just be one activity that I may be interested in learning about. There are an infinite amount of things that someone can improve on and discover on a daily basis. Doing the same things every day (like working the same job 70 hours a week) is what really crushes my soul.

Well, it's not like these people just sit in their room alone staring at the wall. They're doing things that they enjoy (most likely video games, anime/other media and Internet). They're just not doing anything to really improve themselves in any meaningful way. Years go by, nothing ever changes.

I was a NEET for almost two years in my late teens/early twenties. I worked out constantly/got pretty ripped and taught myself how to play guitar. I also spent a lot of time online and playing video games, which is time you spend having fun but it's basically time wasted at the end of it all. I would also eat or sleep whenever. The freedom aspect of it is nice but it's depressing if you ever think about the future or about the reality that your life is going nowhere.

Well, (Im assuming) youre at least somewhat interested in anime based on the links in your signature.

Maybe you could begin drawing your own artworks. Maybe youve already tried that, but thats just one example of an infinite number of new things that you could learn how to do.

I have been writing in a journal for the past two years. When I first started, my handwriting was atrocious. Im talking chicken scratch god awful hand writing. Now when people see my writing, they always comment about how neat it looks.

Its impossible to keep doing something over an extended period of time and not get better at it.

The NEET acronym specifies not being in education, meaning formal settings

You aren't in education if you're teaching yourself through your own means. Just like you aren't employed as a chef just for cooking your own meals

What do you want to hear exactly?

Other people: "Why don't you go do something productive with your time instead of doing fuck all?"

NEET: "Well, what am I supposed to do! There's nothing to do anyway!"

Speaks for itself doesn't it?

The lack of motivation is a pretty great deal for some NEETs.

Like, I personally have a bunch of skills I want to develop, but my motivation is an absolute zero to do them.

Also, everyone is different, you may feel like exploring new hobbies and skills is fun, but others may not think so.

I think there's also the availability of things. I mean, you want more time badly because you don't have it, so you want to be able to do more things. NEETs have all the time in the world so they can't really find good ways to spend that time.

Imo, at least.

My drawing skills.

You can probably say something like "if you wanna draw, then draw", but again, I have no motivation to do it.

I don't want to. I don't really ever want to do anything, that's the problem. Sometimes I play Overwatch, and watch a little bit of tv. Most of the time I just sit here on gamefaqs lurking being bored and thinking to myself.

Nothing. That's the problem.

Actually, I wouldn't mind having a VR headset to hang out in different environments and stuff.
Other than that though, everything gives me too much anxiety just imagining it to even try it.

Learn what? Doing something on your mind only not to take it seriously and possibly lose that skill over time is no different than enjoying short-lived entertainment. As such there are fewer things a NEET could learn that'll stick.
