it's a net-good as far as technological advancement with some very glaring cons as the trade off
quite a few scientific breakthroughs and inventions have had similar mixed impacts on society over time lots of good, but with notable "side effects" that we've just kinda ignored cause we love new shit we can show off --- le Moo ... Copied to Clipboard!

Social media has become a cess-pool of political bullshit, "reality" and instathots and social "experiments".
And then you have people who are obsessed with putting every moment on their social media app. Like a mother breastfeeding her newborn or a mother putting pics up of her children bathing. There just are zero boundaries now. In 25 years, it will likely be a net-bad.
It's the culmination of a society once separated by countries and even states and cities. These divisions created bubbles which others are not respective of, can't come to terms with and refuse to do to do so in many cases, thus it will just amplify hate and fear in society. --- It all just disappears, doesn't it? The only real positive is thst one guy you hung out with a few times in high school and forgot about sends you a friend request and you guys chat for fifteen minutes, then life continues as normal.
And when you think about it later, it really wasn't that much of a positive anyway. Life brings people into your path and takes them out of your path for a reason. We're not built to maintain thousands of relationships for decades. We keep in touch with the people most important to us, and the rest don't miss us any more than we miss them. They're keeing up with their most important people too. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Social media allows people with terribly unreasonable, idiotic, and ignorant views to find each other en mass and band together.
Before social media those people would be shunned and their stupidity would end there. Said people also tend to be VERY LOUD and want to make sure everyone knows what they believe, social media simply feeds this idiots. I never jumped on the bandwagon. The few times I did try poking my head around the corner on social media, it reminded me of why I'm *so* glad I never got sucked in.

are forums social media? I'd argue no. Websites and services like forums don't have that aspect where they inherently try to get you to put a face to your presence. Edit: Technically all community sites fall under social media, as a technical term, I suppose. But if we're to draw a line between "modern" social media and all the negative stuff that gets associated with it, it's usually identity that sets it apart from the old channels we're used to. --- ... I don't use social media and my life is fantastic. I've noticed that those heavily involved in social media tend to have more psychological problems (like depression), or they end up getting themselves in some drama or into trouble.
I don't see how social media has helped society in any way.
