I went to school for 10 semesters straight before I took summer off and then graduated that winter semester. I thought it was better.

got a pesky cold that won't quit. been sick for almost 1 exact week.

Life's fine. I'm still working all around the world, if you were around when I was last doing that. Currently in Africa, but should be back home next week for the foreseeable future. Though... I thought that last time I got home (in May) and less than a year later the shipped me back over here.

We just hired a bunch of new people though, so maybe in a year or two there might be more people willing to do this so it's not all on me. Back when I agreed to do it, it was because I was basically the only one who could commit to being away for so long. Everyone else has kids (or were expecting them) and couldn't really spend a year working away from home. I'm a pretty obvious choice for this kind of work given that I'm a young single male.

That seems like a pretty interesting life. Do you get much chance to go out and see sights while you're there, or is it mostly focused on work?

Pretty good. Bought a house earlier last year, and changed teams at work, so that time was a little crazy, but things have settled down a bit now.

Don't usually get online until later, and by the time I do, PotD is usually pretty dead, so the compulsion to check on it constantly is a little less overwhelming.

I still like to lurk from time to time though.

Varies. Recently, just work. I often work 1 month rotations (28 days on, 28 days off) with 12 hour shifts, so not a ton of free time to do anything besides eat and sleep. This time I'm doing 3 weeks on, 1 week off, and then back to a normal 9-5 M-F schedule.

Also, where I currently am (Luanda, Angola)... I'm not particularly interested in "seeing the sites". Little too dangerous for my liking. The locals that I work with are all fantastic, but everyone I deal with is well off and highly educated, whereas half this country lives on something like $2USD a day.

12 hour shifts for 28 days at a time sounds pretty grueling. >.<

Would you believe me if I told you that you get used to it?

I find that the "3 week crash" is a problem, but I think that's more due to looking forward to the end of the rotation and getting a month off. Most I worked was 37 days straight, and I don't recall the 3 week crash there, but I do remember being absolutely exhausted when I got home.

What is grueling is 30+ hour shifts. Had to do that twice due to emergencies. One time was particularly rough as it was the day before I rotated out. I started at 6AM and worked until 2PM the next day when my colleague rotated in. I gave him a rundown of the disaster he was walking into, and then started my commute back home. Wasn't able to actually go to sleep until my flight to the US, which didn't leave until around 11PM, so I was up for over 40 hours straight. It was a 14 hour flight, slept the whole way.
