Not that I like Gainax much either, but Trigger is basically everything I don't like about Gainax turned up to 11 while killing the things I did like about Gainax shows. (To be fair, I'm not sure if the latter half of that statement is a trend or if I just didn't like the specific Trigger shows I've seen.)

Trigger's only been around for five years, so I dunno if the comparison makes htat much sense at this point. Trigger's made a good number of good shows in a short time period though. KLK, Ninja Slayer, and Inferno Cop are great.

I don't like their organic messy style of animation so we have that in common. I enjoy their shows that feature the clean anime standard style like FranXXX and Inou Battle.

Alright I'm caught up on Franxx, it's fine. I'll keep following along with it, I still like 002 and Ichigo. And honestly I kind of like Goro more than Hiro.

TTGL was fantastic from episode one.

I'd say it's fantastic AT episode 1, not FROM episode 1. There's certainly a lul until episode 8, even some weak episodes. That's pretty standard for Trigger, even as a fan.

Also yes, Gurren Lagann is essentially a Trigger show, even if the studio label is Gainax. No secret why Gainax post Gurren has basically been a dead studio.

Do they STILL do quality work, though? They haven't put out anything worthwhile since all of the Trigger staff left them, the studio is basically a carcass. A carcass stuffed with debt.

FRANXX is A1 pictures with Trigger on a leash trying to hold it back from humping someone. Episode 4 was all Trigger, and while the restraint is there it shows in the fights.

After the Rain is a good choice.

I'm not sure what kinds of anime you like, but I want to at least give a shout-out to Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens since I haven't seen anyone here talking about it. It isn't my favorite of the season or anything but so far I've really been enjoying the world-building and the characters. It has been consistently entertaining.

My #1 true Gainax show is FLCL, so complaining about Trigger's loose style always seemed off to me. Guess not everybody loves FLCL, though.

I'm honestly pretty open to anything, I tend to end up watching more Shonen but the right slice of life can get me. One of the first mangas I've ever read and got super into was Aria.

I mean FLCL is a top 10 anime for me, so you'll hear no complaints there. Nothing else from Gainax/Trigger comes close to that imo, but yeah. (Though NGE and Gunbuster are also quite good)

The style itself isn't exactly the issue I have with them, though I probably would say that it's a symptom of the problem. If I were to try and summarize it, my issue with them is that it seems like they tend to like using self-parody as a tool to tell a serious story, which to me feels wrong from the outset. Of course, I think the reality is probably more complicated in a way I can't quite figure out, since what I've just said could probably apply to Danganronpa for example, which is something I do like. Or maybe I just happened to watch something by Gainax/Trigger at the wrong place and time and it ticked me off such that I never got over it, idk.

(To clarify, nothing I've said in that paragraph applies to FLCL, which I will unapologetically claim as a masterpiece)

I remember when I ran a best and worse series by studio topic series on the anime board and FLCL won out as the worst Gainax anime. Good times.

C3Bu was an amazing work of art made by Gainax in 2013, long after the Trigger crew left.
