That is the most paranoid horse shit I've read in a long time. You can buy inexpensive phones in the $150 to $200 price range that are unbelievably awesome devices compared with even flagships from 5 years ago. The quality of the devices has gone up really fast, and you can easily find phones that have great replaceable batteries and lightweight operating systems. You can even flash your own image onto your device if you want.

Once again, this is something that savvy people that read tech sites and shit know, but it's not general knowledge for the average consumer.

Go to a carrier store (where the vast majority of people get their phones) and you'll see that (1) there is very limited space dedicated to mid-range phones and (2) the price of the phone is obscured by listed as just a monthly payment.

A lot of older people actually still assume that the carrier subsidizes the cost of their phone still and locks them into a contract; they have no clue that they are actually taking out a loan on a cell phone, like it's a car or house.

FLUFFYGERM posted...
Stop wasting your money on flagships and maybe you won't be so paranoid. Flagships are top of the line devices for people who don't care about the costs and just want the best of the best.

If you took a look around my office, you'd notice that the vast majority of the people in here only have flagships, because that's what's pushed at the store/in commercials/etc, it's all they know (I don't think I can name a single midrange phone), and they probably don't care enough to have to research phone pricing because it's just a phone and the real cost is hidden from them.

The other option for people is to buy an older phone, which does happen, but then you're still stuck in that planned obsolescence loop. Say you buy an iPhone 6S today, what will you do when you are nagged by Apple to update to iOS 12 and you find that your performance is now awful?

FLUFFYGERM posted...
Removing headphone jacks...are you kidding? USB c is a superior standard by any measurement. Time to enter 2018, my friend. SD card slots are nice and a lot of phones still have them, but you can easily use cloud storage (which is superior to SD cards, tbqh) if your phone doesn't have an SD card.

What is the consumer benefit to this? You lose old features you are accustomed to and as a result, you have to buy NEW headphones, pay for a NEW subscription to iCloud, etc.

This does one thing, and that's further lock you into an ecosystem, whether it's Android or Google. Looks like you have lightning earbuds and an iCloud subscription now, so better not get an Android phone for your next one!

I tried a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which was around $1,000 too and had to return it because the battery life was shit and the features weren't substantial enough to justify the price tag.

My $180 LG Stylo 2 that I bought a year and a half ago is still trucking along. <_< And when it dies, I'll be buying another $180 to $250 phone.

If you're buying Samsung phones at full price you're doing it wrong. I got my Note 8 for $499 unlocked at launch.

How? <_< I'd probably have kept it for $499 tbqh.

Samsung was giving almost $500 for any phone you traded in, all the way back to the iPhone 5S.

LMFAO. I can't believe you're still peddling this shit like it was available for everyone and not giving full information.

You had to buy last year's $1000 device, then return for a recall, just to get $450 off the next year plus at least $50 for a phone to be traded in.

That wasn't a deal nor was it that good. Two weeks later, they had B1G1 Note 8s with an extra $200 GC. That required no previous year bullshit.

@Romulox28

1) Blame that on the consumers not educating themselves. There is no excuse to be uninformed about your purchases in the year of our Lord 2018. And informed consumers are in fact becoming a thing!

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michelleevans1/2017/10/04/how-to-win-over-todays-more-impatient-and-informed-consumer/#789718e3716e

2) Stores will sell what they make the most money on. If people are rushing to buy $1,000 flagships of their own accord, that's not the store's fault.

3) The top ten list of most sold smart phones in 2017 does include Apple devices. BUT, #7 was the Samsung Galaxy J3 which can be bought from Best Buy for $150 unlocked. 4G LTE capable. #8 was the J5 which is $190. (Data comes from IHS global results). The cheapest iphone pulled in respectable market share.

https://techcrunch.com/2016/08/10/the-iphone-se-is-selling-just-as-apple-planned-in-the-u-s-and-europe/

It's hard to find data on these phones but here are more good budget phones:

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/best-cheap-smartphones-payg-mobiles-compared-1314718

4) I've never owned an iPhone so I don't have to worry about planned obsolescence. I have an LG Stylo 2 that I bought when it was already a year or two old and it's still trucking along after a year and a half of ownership. I can also flash a custom image on it if I want better performance, and I can replace the battery whenever I need to.

5) On what planet is replacing an old and deprecated headphone jack with a superior standard shafting the consumer? Seriously? We need to progress eventually. Don't like it? Buy a phone that doesn't have that standard.

And on what planet is moving to cloud storage (an utterly superior data storage solution compared with SD cards) shafting the consumer? Seriously? You're really grasping at straws to push this "the consumer is being exploited" narrative.

no, they push what they are told to push. Verizon is pushing the Pixel 2 now despite it being a very low-selling phone compared to Apple & Samsung phones. And as I said before, these stores are purposely obscuring the price of phones to get people to spend nearly a thousand dollars on a phone every other year. Why is it that the actual retail price written in fine print?

Bob the Baby Boomer isn't going to flash a custom ROM onto his phone when it gets slow, he's going to go down to the AT&T store and finance a new one lol

I do not think I've ever owned another consumer product that just DROPS a feature one day and provides no alternative. My PC still has a VGA port, my TV still has composite ports, my 2015 car still has a damn cigarette lighter socket, etc.

what happened with phones is that in 2016 or 2017, whenever the iPhone 7 came out, Apple announced they would be dropping the headphone jack, and they dropped it, probably saw a surge in headphone sales, and everyone followed suit. it wasn't like USBC earbuds became the standard, Apple just eradicated the headphone jack and let the market decide to play catch up, since they have that much power in the retail space.

The biggest problem is the X is functionally not a direct upgrade over the 8 Plus, which is the closest iOS competitor

You trade bezels for worse battery life, a marginally better screen and a higher price and an overall more fragile phone. The specs are otherwise the same(same CPU, GPU, RAM, Camera, etc). And while the Plus is huge compared to Android phones, its been the same size for iOS users since 2014 and isnt a "problem" that many people are willing to drop hundreds more dollars to solve. I've got an X on lease via T-Mobile and if I had already paid off(or even partially paid off) a Plus model from the last 3 years I would be in no hurry to go buy an X. The X vs the 4.7" iPhone is a more compelling upgrade, but you're paying significantly more for(functionally) cramming the Plus guts into a "normal" sized iPhone.

And Face ID isnt quite there yet as a total replacement for Touch ID. It's still noticeably slower than current gen Touch ID. Gen 1 of both, I'd take Face ID every single time. But Gen 3 or 4 of Touch ID vs Gen 1 Face ID? It's embarrassing how "slow" Face ID is side-by-side, and that quarter of a second unlock is just long enough to make you notice that its there instead of being the seamless unlock "experience" that Apple has been trying to make happen since the iPhone 5S.

But it's not normal. These $1,000 phones are a new phenomenon where flagships just a few years ago went for ~$750 or so.

As mentioned, other flagships from Samsung and Google are just as guilty.

And Lo, though it works fine, I managed to break the screen.

Thing was half the price of my wife's Pixel 2XL.

However, with the Google phone and her google accounts, we saved more than the difference in phone price on e-books this year, as it was a very heavy year for textbooks.

When a hardcopy textbook is 450+ bucks, and an e-book is 22 bucks for a 6 month license because she has a google phone, well, I'll cowboy up for the phone.

I got the X as a christmas present from my parents and I love it. You all sound like a bunch of poor people jobbering about a phone, just looking to bash something. Why, because it is something you cannot afford, so you're just looking to feel important? Idk, whatever the case you look like idiots. I love the phone, there are a couple of people at school who have it and they all love it. Just as any of you ignorant trolls, if you could actually own one, I am sure you as well would say you love it.

The processor is lightning fast. I don't remember ever waiting on anything to load. It's instantaneous. Paying with Apple pay is awesome, I just swing my phone by the register and never have to worry about fumbling my debit card out of my wallet, or typing in my four digit debit code. Winter: I hate it because I'm skinny. I no longer have to freeze my hands by typing in the code to unlock the phone, instead simply flashing my face to the phone unlocks it immediately. Face unlock even works in the dark! The luxury of never having to type your four or 6 digit pass code is blistering awesome once you've experienced it. Those few seconds of typing on your phone for the passcode become annoying when you no longer have to do it. I can't tell a difference on the screen from my iphone 6. The battery on this phone is awesome. My iphone 6 died in 5 hours if i browed the net and watched videos. My X lasts for 3 days without charging and modest use.

I can go on for hours. I listed a couple features out of 20 outstanding things it does. I'm surprised you're not all **** posting how stupid Lamborghini and Ferrari are. Oh wait, if this was a car website you would be doing the same thing.. Trolls are trolls.

How can you talk **** about something you've never owned and don't truly understand? Oh well, nice try though.

If you want a small phone that's still in production then the IPhone SE is your only choice

You could always go to your nearest Walmart for an unlocked motorla for 20 bucks for those that can't sack up and get a real phone.
And yes, this post is intended for the people bashing the X. Don't worry, no matter your budget, there is a phone for you out there. You no longer need worry the stress of cost with motorals flip phone bulletproof technology. Throw it off the balcony, no problem. 5 day battery charge? No problem. Swimming? Well maybe slight problem..

edit: I FORGOT! My X is even water proof! Tremendous change from my iPhone 6. Man I'm just overwhelmed with excitement Idk what to do with myself!!!

I like how this kid conflates freedom of choice and inability to purchase.

To be fair, people here are also conflating not knowing better with a preferred ecosystem.

I like my iPhone X but I'm seriously not going to go to those lengths. Buy what you want.

Let me put it this way.

Some things are worth paying for.

You don't need a 1K iPhone.

You also don't need a 4K TV.

But you get the TV. Why? Because you feel it enhances the experience of whatever you'll be playing or watching.

I feel the iPhone X is worth the entry cost, and I'm sure many more won't.

But like everything else, it's all subjective.

So this phone debate is dumb.

Phones are getting too good. No need to upgrade as often. iPhone X is an amazing phone but Im glad they arent normalizing a grand plus for a phone.

my smartphone that lets me talk to people, text, use internet, play games, take pictures, etc only cost $200. Got it after my previous smartphone (lg g3) just randomly stopped working 3 months after the warranty expired for no apparent raisin. Lol @ paying 1k for a smartphone

The problem with the TV analogy is that people tend to keep their sets for 7-8 years on average. Therefore, splurging on that top of the line set makes some sense since you're going to have it for the equivalent of a two-term presidency.

Most folks will be looking to upgrade their X by Year 2 (if not Year 1) - that is, of course, if Apple hasn't already throttled it.

I tried to go back to Android and it sucked so bad I went back to exchange it for an iphone 8.

How do you people type on those non responsive screens?

Sounds like the kind of thing that applies to the manufacturer instead of the OS. In Android land, there's a difference.

Mine is Android and the touch is fine. Sometimes it'll work when I don't even touch it, if I get close enough.

My samsung phones have always seemed more responsive than my mom's iPhones... she keeps asking me to 'fix' her phone and its normally simple fixes on android OS's, but takes so much more effort on the iPhone OS...

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-scales-back-iphone-x-waymo-buys-fiat-chrysler-vans-walmart-cracks-deliveries-155551342.html

Apple (AAPL) is slashing production of its new iPhone X in a sign of weak demand for the $1,000 smartphone. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple plans to make 20 million phones in the first quarter instead of the 40 million it initially planned. Apple will offer its first report on iPhone X sales when it reports earnings Thursday.

It only took a $1,000 price tag, but looks like we finally found the point at which Apple consumers will push back against a mediocre product.

I like mine :/

It didn't cost me $1,000 either, I upgraded from my old phone, it was cheap

What? Thats doubtful unless you traded in your phone that is at most a year or so old. Even then, most carriers still quote like $699 on "select trade ins."

That's what I did. And then I keep paying $20 a month for a while. It isn't that much TBQH, and I intend to keep the phone for 2 years so yeah.

So you are still paying $1000... just over a term...

Has nothing to do with the price. It's due to a lot of factors already discussed, but I'll add another: Chinese markets especially didn't like its smaller size. Own the stock, not the product. Apple will surprise when it reports.
