Not gonna lie I bought it because I thought the game was really immersive in the beta but I got tired of it within a week, the map rotation was so bad and it just felt so shallow :(

I think I'm one of a handful of people who actually enjoyed the singleplayer story though.

As such that is a pathetic number.

Is this the new Justice League, whereby people don't understand that with a huge investment you need an even bigger return to recoup the costs of licensing, production, and marketing before turning a profit? They spent so much on the damn thing that the game needed to essentially be the biggest selling game of the year rather than "merely" one of the biggest games of the year to get back in the black.

I didn't buy the game and loot crates don't bother me so I didn't get the uproar because I just didn't want it. However, this is a dumb thread because its only measuring the success of the outrage based on terms of sales.

The outrage did change things:
-- EA made changes to the game in direct response to the complaints.
-- There is no way of knowing how many units would have been sold if the complaints didn't happen. 9 million is a lot but its all relative and you don't how much they would have sold.

It was 1 million under target. So it is a slight disappointment. Combining that with the lack of microtransactions EA did feel a hit from the controversy.

Still no where near a disaster though. They would have made their money back.

Also FWIW the game is broken to the point where you can't redeem your challenge rewards (such as "get 20 kills with the grenade" or "capture an objective 30 times"), and the subreddit for the game is basically just thread after thread after thread of people asking how to fix it.

Not just that, but even if the game was marginally profitable, nobody spends a huge amount of money to only make a small amount of profit. That's a horrible ROI.

that was so depressing. I tried the beta, knew it was going to be garbage, gave my predictions about the future of the game after launch, got called a troll by a bunch of idiots excited about "boots on the ground" Call of Duty gameplay by the best company ever omg123123!@!!!!!! and then... got to see my predictions come even truer than I ever anticipated, and see those same idiots who did spend money on it complaining about the company.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with people that they're willing to throw money away like that.

Pretty sure 9 mil is already a huge ROI. Games don't need several million to break even all the time. It's just that they can earn even more money with even more sales and even more microtransaction

When it was under their target projections and without a big chunk of their microtransaction income, yeah it was.

Less than their low end projections and without their ancillary income that they had been banking on. So, in reality, they probably expected a lot more and expected a huge infusion of supplemental income from their purchasers on a regular basis.

Being under target projections (which likely would have been insane) doesn't mean it was a horrible ROI.

This was a game developed in two years built off the previous game that already sold 14 million.

We're talking about a game that was expected to be insanely profitable being kicked down to crazy profitable.

They're turning microtransactions back on in March. Not sure what point you're trying to say here. You don't think BF2 wouldn't have made more money if they've had the microtransactions on?
