I mean I played age of empires 1 when I was like 10 but I wasn't good at it.

It just devolved into using the cheat codes for the cars and sniper guys(or was that aoe2?) after the enemy had too many units to take out

Age of empires 2 I really sucked at standard death match games but I was good at custom scenarios

I played a pretty dumbed down version of them. It was the full game, but I wasnt doing competitive p2p; I just played campaign a lot so I could just take my time.

RTS is too much shit to keep up with. Especially with ADHD. If you had/have that too, that may be your answer.
