I think some people call it a war on coal because the only reason its competitive is due to massive government subsidies, either in the production of the energy itself, of the raw materials needed to produce it (for example: China is the sole supplier of wind turbines because they significantly undercut the market through government subsidies). At least right now in many instances it's still not cost effective enough to stand on its own.
