World eases you in super slowly with tons of tutorials.

Annoying to veterans but for beginner's it's nice.

Honestly, I didn't find it as bad as some of the older entries. The last game literally didn't let you hunt a real monster for the first few hours. Instead, you walked around picking flowers and hunting tiny monsters. At least world lets you jump right into hunting the big guys.

Only if you have a hammer, usually tail otherwise.

But seriously though, don't worry about your armor too much in low rank (5 or less star quests), because once you go to high rank, even the basic armor will be better than what ever you got. Still keep your armor up to date though, but don't try and grind out all the set. I only had 2 sets through low rank, one in the beginning and one near the end.

Keep your weapon upgraded though, they follow trees, so you still need to grind out low rank materials before going to high rank materials. Grinding is much easier for weapons though because it's 1 item as opposed to 5.

Take your time to read all tutorials they offer up. Consult the monster guide often and research. Don't assume just because you are in the first or second area that you are capable of killing everything there. Some monsters you can't even touch until much later unless you want to spend your day dying repeatedly. Your Palico can be very useful, get him the right equipment and learn the functions of his gadgets.

Take your time and try all weapons in the training area. Don't just settle on one, try a bunch and see what fits your play style. Some for me are unusable, and some are pretty beast.

Use buffs, potions, and eat a meal before every battle or expedition. Don't hesitate to just take a few hours to explore, gather, and craft. You never know what you are gonna find or run into. It's one of those rare games that most items have a helpful function in a lot of scenarios.

Not just hammer, but hunting horn and any bowgun that isn't using slicing ammo. Seriously, though, you are pretty much right. However, to be fair, the head is almost always a weakpoint, where as the tail is more hit and miss. If you don't know anything about the monster you are fighting, you can't go wrong by popping it in the head.

The only time you wouldn't be going for the head is when you can't be, i.e. you don't have the range like with S&S, longsword, dual blades, etc. Greatsword, Charge Blade, Lance, Gunlance... all would rather be hitting the head than anywhere else, except for the few monsters where the head isn't a weak point. Weapons that can't hit the head want to be going for areas that create damage windows like the legs.

Tails are easy to cut and take like two combos from anything that does decent opportunistic damage (so not S&S or lance, for example, which are more about steady damage). Focusing the tail the whole hunt instead of going for more damage or more opportunties to wail on the monster freely (tripping, status effects, etc.) is a bad practice.

Also correct.

Moral of the story, read your hunter notes before heading out. For first time monsters where you don't have notes yet, in general if it looks squishy, it probably is. You'll find out very soon if it's not.

- Try out every weapon to find what suits you most
- Focus on not getting hit before you focus on doing the hitting
- Gather everything in your path and even the stuff that's not, crafting is important
- Use the in-game hunter's guide to your advantage, it's got tons of useful information
- Always eat before a quest or expedition
- Don't forget to carve the monster/its parts and pick up any monster material that fell off
- If you're having trouble with a monster, switch to a weapon that it's weak to and use armor that has good skills against it
- Never be afraid to ask for advice if you need it
- Enjoy feeling like a badass as you slam a giant weapon down on a monster's head or shoot an arrow right through its whole body

Also, just understand that the combat system is slower and very deliberate in this game. It can take a bit to click; but once it does, it'll feel much more fluid than initial impressions might lead you to believe.
