Is that true with the same HDD being tested or just when the drive in the external is faster since it's a 7200rpm drive when compared to the standard internal drive which is 5400rpm? Why would a drive be faster as an external drive than an internal drive if it was the same drive? I use an external but just because 3.5 drives are cheaper than 2.5 and I already had a 3.5 enclosure around.
