I was over at IGN before Melee was released. I remember how hyped we were for the game, and how disappointed we were when it was revealed that six of the new characters were "clones". I myself was disappointed that the only Gold/Silver Pokemon that was playable was Pichu. But still, those were fun times.

Sure. I didn't care about Smash Bros back then though, until I played Melee at computer camp.

I only caught in on the "pre-release" online hype phase when Brawl came out. IIRC that was one of the reasons I made a GFaqs account, those boards were pretty crazy leading up to launch, especially with the (daily? weekly? can't remember) Dojo updates. When Melee came out the hype was mostly IRL with friends -- we played a ton of it for several years after it came out, until Brawl basically.

Funny how Melee is the game I still watch/play today, and Brawl just kinda died, but eh. Hype giveth, hype taketh away

Barely. Our Internet was really spotty at the time, but I remember the prerelease period rather well.

Pre brawl hype is the peak of my time in the internet, and I was like 10/11 at the time. I remember the delays for Brawl too. Supposed to come out December 3rd, 2007, then delayed until February (I'm pretty sure this was the same day Sonic was announced), then again until March

We had the internet around the time of Melee, but that was before I even thought about using the internet for gaming related stuff. Back then, it was still something mystical that I didn't really understand or use for anything constructive :p

Yes, but I don't recall being a part of any communities. I'd just look up info on characters and stuff as it came out.

Those daily updates were something to look forward to every day before school.

I had internet, but I didn't follow the news about Melee closely. Hell I didn't start following the news about Brawl closely until after Sonic was revealed.

Can't say I was. Definitely remember being a part of the brawl hype though. The Dojo site made things pretty exciting daily.
