Before last night, you could justify Jiren by saying he was Universe 11's Goku. He must have had a difficult path similar to the one Goku went through.

They had no reason to try and slightly define that past. What they gave us is significantly worse and less impactful than what we could have imagined.

Let the fucking manga give him backstory if you want to.

The problem with Jiren he's had a whole year to build a character but they haven't bothered

All other arcs let the villain develop through the story, we watched Frieza strive for the Dragon Balls, Cell seek out his Perfect Form he became so proud of, and even watched Buu's metamorphosis of absorbing people mutating his own personality, setting up the reversion to his pure self from the Kai backstory.

And this isn't a Z only thing, because Super gave us a fully developed character with Zamasu, who's character honestly carries that arc's relatively barren plotline.

This whole year Jiren just exists in the background, comes in to punch out a strong character's crazy form, yet refuse to finish anybody off. No length of flashback is going to save that when we're only 4-5 episodes from the end of the series with the longest arc we've seen.

That's why I think it's a thousand times better if they just leave us up in the air about him. Let us think up our own backstory for him instead of giving us two minutes of shoe horned BS.

I thought Jiren's backstory worked BECAUSE it mirrors Goku's dragonball story. I thought it made total sense.

When you look back at other tournament antagonists, Jiren has more backstory than Tien or even Piccolo Jr.

Yeah, for me the issue isn't so much the content (fairly standard backstory but not nonsensical at least) but it's the fact that we've been waiting so long to find out who jiren is and why and OOPS, a few minutes and we're done!

It just leaves you like..."that's it?" It feels like they knew they had to get his story in somewhere but had no idea where so they just randomly decided to have belmod speak up about it for no reason.

17 is such a god damned champion holy shit. Easy MVP of the arc and has probably gotten more shit done this arc alone than most people in all of Dragon Ball.

yeah, no kidding.
he's saved 18 multiple times and fixed her ankle, Frieza multiple times, Goku, Vegeta. i forget if he saved Gohan at some point or not. he's gotten multiple eliminations and involved himself in so many fights to help support his teammates. he came up with strategies against enemies nobody else figured out, like the guy who was too small to hit. he actually managed to take multiple hits from a god of destruction and the guy beyond him in ways nobody else on his team could do.

you'd expect Super to be sponsored by Japan's Park Services with how ridiculous he's been.

17 actually thought about his actions, and made plans. That was refreshing to see among a multitude of characters who are purely about overpowering their foes and nothing else.

And yeah he teamed up with practically everyone.

Universe 7 would have been out a long time ago if he hadn't been there, holy shit.

I don't know, the only parts I really remember is that goku ran a monster heavy aggro deck because he was too stupid to understand spell/trap cards, and vegeta almost lost but came back to win a duel.
