We keep admitting a guy at the hospital that keeps shooting up street drugs. He never has money for his hospital bills or money for his prescriptions that he needs but he always finds enough money to buy drugs on the street.

Look. I understand the need to help people that don't have anything but why are wasting money and resources on someone that doesn't learn and go back to do the same thing over and over? It sounds cruel but he needs to be left to natural selection at this point. We are wasting too much money on people like him.

Drugs need to be decriminalized and their need to be safer places for these people. That's a much better solution to the problem.

Yep. Proper treatment and handling of addicts isn't the answer - letting em die is the smart move.

You're in the wrong career buds.

It's less natural selection and more the system is failing it's patients

But good luck trying to get the egg heads on board with that

You do realize my opinion isn't rare in the healthcare field. People go into the field wanting to help people. Then you see stuff like this and your opinions change. You start to become more heartless.

I was a much kinder person before I started working and seeing what I saw. It's like those type of people are draining my sympathy or something.

Here is the thing... Getting the help he needs doesn't guarantee anything if he doesn't accept the help or want the help. Do you know why he is here? He is here because he got a huge infection in his arm where he normally shoots up. That's why he is here. It wasn't an overdose this time. He's going to go back out there and do what he always has done. Drugs don't discriminate. You see millionaires that have major drug problems. They have the resources to get the help they need but don't.

I don't know this guys past. He might have already had the help and resources he needed but he refused them which caused the people who cared about him to disappear from his life. Giving him the proper help doesn't guarantee results.

If there is one thing that dealing with frequent fliers in the ambulance has taught me, it's that some people are uninterested in getting help and it's impossible to help people like that.

Which is a direct symptom of the help he needs not being available. That wouldn't have happened if he didn't have to reuse needles.

I hate dealing with frequent fliers, they've been given multiple resources to get help. They choose not to use it. I'm not gonna feel bad if their life choices lead to death.

That's not fair either. It takes time, bairly any granted, to change a needle. If you are addicted to drugs... that time can feel like a n eternity. There is a strong chance they will shoot up with the dirty needle while the clean needle is sitting right next to them

He needs to be treated like an addict, not a normal person with normal person logic. He's going to shoot up, he's going to get easily avoidable illnesses, he's going to be a pain in the ass, he's going to do everything he can to get high. That's how this disease works. Most doctors are able to see this, but they aren't able to properly care for them given the rules, laws, insurances that surround him, so they get stuck in the circle of stupid.

If the healthcare system just gave doctors the resources to how they see fit for patients, the system would be drastically better

Given the current scenario though, natural selection is probably the net good. The patient is going to see a near death experience and have actual fear/disgust of themselves before they go after it

Maybe you're right. I don't know. I don't work for clinics that target those specific issues. All I know is that we do offer help at the hospital and the people that are frequent fliers don't accept it. That's what we see. There is no effort to even try to get better. They don't care. I don't see how giving these people a flyer to a clinic that is know to treat people very well helps those people if they toss that flyer in the garbage.

Nah. People that think like you should definitely not be in the field. If you say most are like that, then all that means is the medical field is poisoned and needs an overhaul, or a culling. If teachers started mentally abusing their students in droves, it doesn't make that behavior acceptable for that job. This is like when people say we need to accept the bad cops with the good because otherwise there would not be enough cops. No thanks with that bullshit.
