I think once. That whole warehouse area is bullshit.
Surprisingly I don't find the underwater area difficult at all now. I remembered it being so hard when I was a kid. Now I breeze through it.

Yeah - I think the toughest part when I was younger was memorizing where the bombs were. I still might have to sacrifice a turtle on that seaweed part sometimes, though. Sometimes I can get through it without taking too much damage, and other times I just have to waste a turtle (like that useless Raph >_>).

There's always that one part in the 4th level that will likely decide the whole run for me. If I can get over that instant death quicksand or not.

Played, yes. Beaten, no.

Turtle Van always got me. I could never figure out where to go.

I have. Took many many tries over my lifetime, but I've done it.

Stupid Area 3 sewer jump
Stupid Area 4 lava pits
Stupid Area 6 last hallway

Those were the main hard parts for me.

Yes. I've beaten the Ghouls 'n Ghosts trilogy and the Ninja Gaiden trilogy. And TMNT 1 is the hardest game I have ever beaten.

It's the one game for which I truly begrudge the difficulty. It's based on a children's cartoon show. The difficulty should be such that a child could beat it. The difficulty never should've gone beyond what it was in the first three stages and they should've had the courtesy to refill your health between stages.

Had they done that, I think it'd be an NES gem. I mean it really is a fun and expansive game. It has five overworld maps, a plot which fits Ninja Turtles, an accessible van in the overworld which changes up the gameplay, and some fun side scrolling action. But the game is just way, way too hard for its own good.

Speaking of TMNT, I finally beat TMNT 2 for the first time last night. I've had some games which left my palms sweaty, but that final boss fight was the first time I recall being able to feel my heart pounding. I was genuinely physically shaking by the time I won.

I never figured out where to go until I became a teenager in the early 2000's when I went back on an NES kick. I figured it out on my own, too. In the early 90s I was too young to figure out what I was supposed to do.

I never had trouble with the sewer jumps in Area 3 once I figured out how to do those "light jumps". That is really easy once you master the art of those.

There's probably a strategy for it now, but another thing that would decide the outcome of my run is if I could locate the technodrome easily. I know there's some sort of RNG bullshit going on for it which makes it appear, but man, if you go through those sewers and have to come back out....you lose like 60% of your health if you guess the wrong sewer. And the last hallway - I've only managed to get thru once, but the one time I did...I beat the game.

Yeah. When I actually got to the end of that final hallway the first time, I had to sit on pause for a good 10-15 minutes trying to calm down. Intense as fuck.

I couldn't get past the warehouse district. That game was way too hard for 5 year old me back in 1990. I loved the second and third games. Super Shredder fucked my cousin and I up on the 3rd game though, we were pissed.

Have you played any of these games? I've browsed a couple topics on some retro gaming sites about the hardest game ever made, and these are some generally obscure titles that were posted kind of frequently; I'd be interested in hearing about their difficulty from someone who's managed to beat the original Ghosts 'n Goblins trilogy:
Holy Diver (NES)
Rayxanber II (Turbo CD)
Undead Line (Genesis)
Chakan: The Forever Man (Genesis)
The Adventures of Batman & Robin (Genesis)
Mars Matrix (Dreamcast)

Final hallway of TMNT 1 or TMNT 2? I was talking about the second game, but that hallway in the first game is brutal.
