Rose is there to the explain to a former member of the Armed forced What a arm deal is, she is also there to tell a slave what slavery is, also to tell him what animals are. And all around take all of his agency away in the process.

Rose was a mistake. You cant just throw in a new main character midway through the arc like that.

Lando works because he was a mostly static character whose arc was directly tied to the plot. Anything that happened with Lando in ESB advances the story.

Rose is given so much screen time and development and nothing she does has any tangible effect on anything.

This makes no sense. The First Order was supposed to be the rag tag remnants of the Empire. The Republic should have control of most of the galaxy even if they lost the Hosnian system in the previous movie...

They aren't a rag tag group. They've been building themselves up in secret since the original trilogy and the Republic don't have an army. There's only the Resistance.

I don't think TFA did a good job setting this up.

Kylo had been shot by Chewies god damn bowgun and we have seen what that thing does. And he was toying with Finn. He was extremely gimped in that fight. And she won by catching him off guard.

Luke also wasn't taking her seriously. And God knows if he had he could have just launched her in to orbit. We have seen how strong Luke really is. Remember her getting owned by snoke?

And she went from an orphan no one wanted to a person caught up in something bigger than her. Almost gave up on her journey. Until she just couldn't turn her back on the atrocities of the First Order. Finds out she isn't just lucky, there is something special about her.

Then finally needs the call of the force and is able to save her friend. Finds Luke and he is a broken man who feels he has no place in the story anymore. Convinces him to train her. Won't give up on Kylo even though everyone thinks him an monster that can't be redeemed. And after all the trust she put in to Kylo, only for him to betray her and his own Lord. Even going so far as to tell her that her family is nothing and basically sold her in to slavery.

That'd a pretty good arc.

And even if the Republic has no army, they should have some sort of authority and presence in the universe. How the fuck does the government function?

Yeah they doubled down on Rey being powerful with no subtlety or nuance. She bests Luke, she beats Kylo, she whups the guards.

Snoke was a waste of a character. And he was so powerful in the Force but couldn't sense Kylo moving the lightsaber spinning it toward him?

I loved the movie, but I did think that scene looked weird. I get the idea. She was force sensitive since at least Return of Jedi. Still looked weird, though.

Because Kylo is talented in the force, but immature and dumb. Rey is also talented in the force and a decent martial artist but basically has luck as her superpower because she is the Force's chosen avatar.

I mean, even in the last one, people complained that Rey could go toe-to-toe, but he literally had an explosive weapon just pierce his side and was completely blinded by pain and rage. It's amazing he was still standing at all at that point. The weapon that hit him literally sent an armored trooper twelve feet through the air when shot at point blank.

I mean, yeah, some of the plot is contrived, but that is perfectly normal for Star Wars and I don't know why people expect battlefield simulations from the series that brought us space wizards and AT-fucking-ATs.

Rey is a shitty character, Finn is a shitty character, Kylo Ren is the only character that isn't garbage and is mildly interesting.

It was said earlier in the movie that force projection is powerful enough to kill someone, which is what Luke did. As for the "vanishing"...I guess that's to mirror how Obi-Wan died.
