I wouldn't go so far as to say they necessarily make people stupid, but they do certainly encourage groupthink and prevent people from thinking for themselves, for fear of getting ostracized by the party.

Yes. The last presidential election proves it. The two worst candidates in history had people not only voting for them but cheering for them. Voting for Trump or Hillary is one thing, but cheering them because they had the 'correct' letter next to their name is the height of stupidity.
