Every adult (18+) is now considered an organ donor unless they specifically opt out. I think this is a great idea.

I don't understand why anyone would opt out of this.

Organ donation is only a good thing but I don't think it should be opt out like this. I don't like the idea that the Government has control over my body unless I ask otherwise.

do you mind elaborating on why? you will be dead, it's impossible for you to care or be 'creeped out' at that point.

what if it went to a private company of your choosing? and, again, what does it matter what anyone does with your body after you're dead? you won't even know it's happened.

do you mean like, leaving your cadaver to your next of kin so they can sell parts?

couldn't find anything about this in the article. i'd assume that your organs wouldn't be used in a transplant, but maybe they could be used for science in some other way.

good question

They actually have effective medical networks so they'd figure that out quickly.

I'm not a donor nor do I ever give blood. Fear of needles aside, my shit is tainted and would probably be rejected anyway.

I wouldn't support this in the U.S., maybe in other countries. Over here, if you're an organ donor, your name will be placed in a database. Then, if a member of the liberal elite like the Clintons or the Obamas ever need an organ and you happen to be convenient, you will be targeted. You'll end up in fatal "accident" so that your organs can be harvested for someone who was deemed more important than you.

why make that assumption yourself instead of letting medical professionals do it? your organs could save a life, or two or six. and if your organs are 'tainted', they could probably be used for other science stuff like research

I think I would prefer the government to a company to be fair. And that's fair, I'll be dead, I can't complain. I just think it's a bit inhumane to treat a dead body like a resource that way.

A good idea in theory

A bad idea in practice because some people in the right places could end up killing people for money.

inhumane?

that means "without compassion for misery or suffering". in what way would your dead body be experiencing either of those things?

your body is going to deteriorate into a useless chunk of dust anyway, why not put those chunks of dead cells to good use?

im sorry if i am coming off as confrontational here, tone is hard to convey through text. im trying to understand your mindset, not trying to convince you that you're wrong.

what's to stop that from happening without a universal donor list? or, rather, why does making people organ by donors by default make this more of a concern?

Inhumane might not be the right word. I'm not against donating my organs personally or anything. I don't know if I can explain my mindset. I agree, why not put them to good use. But I still think you should have the choice if you want it to be or not.

Which to be fair, you have with this. Opt out is still giving you the choice. I suppose if you want to opt out, you can. If you don't know to opt out, it probably doesn't mean that much to you.

There's enough people who volunteer to be organ donors. There's no need to target non-donors and it would be more likely to expose their operation.

that's pretty messed up.

one could argue, though, that if more people were donors then such things wouldn't happen because it would alleviate the pressure/need for donations

I work alot in the ICU and I've been the doctor in the ICU interacting with the donor network people. They have no clue wtf they are talking about. We basically get them on board and we decide independently when to do the brain death exam. In these cases we usually have a neurologist on board as well.
