Well:

Over cleaning resulted in abrasion over the entire painting, especially in the face and hair of Christ.[42]

The orb is also interesting in that da Vinci didn't include the distortion that would be apparent.

I wonder what the face originally looked like. The restoration changed the face quite a bit.

That's assuming it's made of earthly material, no? :p

It's nice. A lot of da Vinci's work is fantastic. My favorite is my avatar, Head of a Woman.

Indeed.

That's what Walter Issacson said in his recent biography, that the orb rendered that way might have been intentional as if to indicate a miracle by Christ.

Yeah, it's readily apparent that something happened to this painting that wasn't Da Vinci's intent - the head and body almost look out of focus compared to the crispness and tonal contrast of the hands.

Perspective is an artistic tool that was invented during the Renaissance, and even great masters like Da Vinci were just starting to get a handle on it. So I always take hand, arm and feet oddities from this era with a grain of salt.

Actually, the hand was drawn in sharp focus on purpose according to that new biography. I just watched the Charlie Rose episode on it and the biographer explains it well.
