A school shooting every 60 hours in the US right now. School shootings deadlier than Columbine. And the pace is picking up.

Your country is so, so, so fucked.

Oh, I'm sorry, now's not the time. When will the time be, out of curiosity? Because if it's not within the next few hours tHERE WILL HAVE ALREADY BEEN ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOTING!

my wife and i were talking about this yesterday. she is a HS teacher and is absolutely terrified of this because every teacher goes to school now with the idea in their head that they might be the unlucky winners of the lottery the next day and have a kid bring a gun to school.

she said kids that are even mild behavioral offenders now need to be treated like potential shooters and there is talk of having increased security in schools (armed police stationed in schools). it's getting real bad.

I get where you are coming from but people die from car accidents every 16 minutes in the U.S. and that doesn't stop people from driving.

Ah, you're right. We absolutely CANNOT ban anything so important to modern life and the economy as ___. (noun, plural)

Fill in the blank to make the sentence not ridiculous.

I don't believe that, and this is coming from someone who also believes we have too lax gun laws. Is this one of those statistics where they do shit like bundle suicides within the "school zone" neighborhood bubble as school shootings?

18 school shootings this year (google it, pick any source you want because there are dozens reporting this number)
45 days in to the year = 1080 hours in to the year
1080/18 = 60

Oh, so it's a running average, not an actual yearly average. That's a pretty significant difference.

Yeah, significant in pointing out that the periodicity is shrinking, that the trend is only accelerating in frequency.

Except school violence has been on a significant decline over the last 20-30 years, so your choice of range on the data has a significant impact on the "message"

Honestly. Why even have kids in the first place? Wages have been stagant so your just adding an extra expense you might not be able to afford. Government wants to cut access to social safety nets that would help you in the case you can't afford to raise a child. Giving birth to a child is a huge expense if done at a hospital.

US really isn't great to raise children unless you happen to be well off.

Maybe go back to elementary school (try not to get shot!), they'll teach you that when you DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF SHOOTINGS YEAR OVER YEAR, that means that the number of shootings is bigger than it used to be. :0

Go look up the Wikipedia page for "List of school shootings in the US" and "List of all shootings outside the US".

What you'll find is that the American list is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the list of shootings in the entire rest of the world, combined.

And then tell me that the situation in the US is fine. Children for the gun gods! Bullets for the NRA throne!

It's not fine and I said in my very first post that I support stricter gun control.

However, the rate in the US relative to the rest of the world has literally nothing to do with my point that school violence has been on a 30 year declining trend and that scoping your statistics to 1 month to make a point about a larger issue is misleading.

You're so busy frothing at the mouth that you're not only completely misreading my position, but you're making yourself out to look like an irrational fool in the process.

When you say school violence, what does that encompass? Are you saying mass killings are on the decline, or just violence?

In terms of general school violence the CDC has reported a 30 year decline.
In terms of school shooting specifically, the most accurate report I could find still showed a significant decline from the early 90s.
Either way, media hysteria is amping up an issue that, while still a very real problem, is actually on the decline.

Honestly an armed gunman is pretty low on the list of things to worry about at school.

Every 60 hours an armed gunman attacks a school, and that sucks and it's bad and I wish it didn't happen.

Every second kids are bullied, lied to, cheated, belittled, destroyed mentally and emotionally, and led astray at school, and those things can have permanent consequences too.

I know that mass shootings in general the rate has tripled since 2011. But overall gun violence is currently at low historical levels, and logically that should be a much more meaningful statistic than just one particular classification of gun violence.

That's all well and good, but my concern is my kids safety in school, not gang violence.

https://curry.virginia.edu/faculty-research/centers-labs-projects/research-labs/youth-violence-project/violence-schools-and-5

This is just a rollup of reports (see "myth 3" and "myth 4"), but it has a nice graphic and each sub-section references the specific report used. Note that not all the data carries through to 2018, so its possible there's been a short term spike, but the long term trends are still down.

EDIT: Here's a better source
https://crimeresearch.org/2014/06/updated-information-on-k-12-school-shootings-deaths-the-number-of-deaths-has-been-declining-over-time/

EDIT X2: Also note that overall mass shootings ARE on the rise. However, when scoped to school shooting specifically they're trending down.
