As an aside: I usually blast through these, but I'm gonna try my hand at giving actual thoughtful write-ups for once. Might end up throwing this decision out once we hit the mid-range area where I won't have much to say on each song, but we'll see how it goes. I'm by no means versed in the art of music, so when I describe something on a technical level, just understand I'm aware that I sound dumb.

I remember listening to Maximum the Hormone ironically in high school, and since I consider everything I was in high school to be an embarrassment, the things I enjoyed ironically are a special kind of trash that serve only to bring back the harsh memories of that troubled time. WUP is the opening theme to Death Note's infamous second part, which I always enjoyed more because I'm a fan of writers going off the rails after the original plot has been pushed to it's limits. There's some artistry in how well this song emulates the flow of the series itself. Sure, it's a bit hardcore throughout, but it sounds pretty smooth and transitions nicely, only to slowly go more and more out of it's element and becoming a nonsensical wall of incomprehensibility that makes you feel a little bad for the people making it. The vocals here range from grating to obnoxious, and this is one of the few occasions where I feel there's a mechanical difference between the two, though they ultimately make me reach equal levels of aggravation. I guess I can compliment the melody in place.The part at 0:24 would sound pretty damn good if it weren't accompanied by the vocalist doing his best impression of a 4Kids Pokemon. I remember the subs reading that he was saying, "Hey hey human sucker. Hey hey human fucker." in the chorus and I thought that was the most hilarious shit ever. But I'm not laughing now.

Bad vocals aren't always a problem. Ohisama and Waiting So Long are among my favorite ED themes in the industry, and those vocals sound awful! Then you have the brilliant, "What's Up People?" which is worthy of quotes when the others are not. But the key difference with Ohisama and this Japanese bullshit? How it fits. I can't imagine Ohisama working with vocalists that don't sound like they're drunk. It fits the melody, the music, and the themes of the show itself. WataMote's ED certanly hits that last part, but this ranking is based purely on the quality of the song itself. So while I'm aware that the shitty vocals are meant to be uncomfortable to listen to, and this is actually kinda clever in it's own right within the context of the show, it has no place in MY ranking topic. You have this super bubbly melody playing underneath an awkward vocalist doing their best to make their voice sound realistically bad, yet creating a tone that literally no human is going to create without making an effort to do so. The song would probably do alright on this list if the singer were trying, since a better voice would make for a better song. As is, all it does is remind me of a big pet peeve that I didn't really know I had until I began this write-up: Good singers who purposely sing bad. When I was in undergrad, I worked at a Cold Stone Creamery with a girl who was a musician and did live shows and shit. One time Bohemian Rhapsody came on and she started singing in this obviously fake singing voice. I said something like, "Fuck off with that fake singing bullshit." in a joking manner. But I was completely serious underneath my facade. I honestly don't think we spoke again after that day. I'm sure she's still doing the same shit.

Well I mean it was What's Up, People. That song has a lot of people (including me) who hate it a lot.

Good results so far. I can respect these songs for thematic reasons, so that's at least something. At the end of the day though OP's and ED's have to be pleasant to listen to, and these songs just are not at all for me.

Talking Heads released a song called Road to Nowhere that had a similarly pointless choral intro. That was a good song, however. In this song, there is no joy to be had. The singer is flat all the way through, it's transitions sound like bad editing jobs, and it's the same shit on repeat for five minutes, which equals the amount of time better spent listening to "What's Up People?".

I've never seen Monster, so maybe this has some contextual significance, but listening to Herbert from Family Guy sing a soft ballad is fucking creepy and still isn't funny. I think everything else is composed well enough, but, much like the WataMote ED, if a decent singer were given the reigns, we'd have a song that could at least qualify as decent. Instead, we have this sad, sad excuse of noise.

This is probably going to be the first one that seems weird unless you're actually shocked a shitty niche death metal song came in last I guess. Maybe I'm being unfair, since burnout played a massive role. There are like, seven or eight songs with the exact same structure and sound as this song and they're all bad, but this one has a singer that sounds like she ate too much cheese or something. Like, there's way too much mucus built up in her throat and it puts me off an otherwise generic tune. And what's with that title anyway? If you have to put the English spelling in parentheticals, was there any reason for Greek letters?

Mid-2000s post-grunge was mostly bad stuff. Sure, I jammed to it in elementary school, but it's not as if I remember those times fondly. This song follows an incredibly boring structure, where the singer lazily stammers out words in the verses, then lazily stammers them out a bit louder during the chorus. All of this accompanied by some HARDCORE guitars that consist of pretty dull strumming. The female singer wasn't bad though. She should've been here the entire time tbqh. Also there's this grating whistle popping in and out of the song, which forced me to drop this 110 places. Really dumb design choice in the opinion of this acclaimed music analyst.

I don't really remember a ton about this song, just that it was really bad. I do remember actually physically laughing at how horrendous the rapping was. Whoa, the vocalists here are actually both solid, and the song is pretty cool for a little bit. But, just like every great accomplishment in the history of mankind, it eventually gets ruined by shitty trap rap. I don't really know the difference between trap and dubstep, but whatever is on display here makes me cringe. Shame how you can just tarnish a decent song in that way. Monsters.

Fun fact: If you provide a working link, I will assume that this is the way you want me to hear the song, no matter how stupid it may sound with shounen battle SFX blaring into my speakers. Some call it stubbornness, but I prefer to call myself a humanitarian, graciously keeping my mouth shut about the links you provide and not making you feel bad. It's the least I can do. The song itself is repetitive and forgettable, but those sound effects are decent.

But then you get to this section where songs aren't really bad, but are completely forgettable in every fashion, and I no longer get to make bad jokes because I actually have to think about what to write when talking about these dull things. Maybe I'll just keep doing this whole stream of consciousness thing because nobody's said they're annoyed yet. Regardless, this write-up is far more than I think anyone could ever say about this song. Holy shit is it bland.

Highly recommend not actually watching the video provided on account of the most disturbing animation I've ever witnessed. Witch Activity takes the whole idol approach of putting a bunch of girls with the same voice into a single song and making them sing the same stuff all at once and that bothers me, because it just sounds like something's wrong with my headphones, then I waste money on shit I don't need. When they sing on their own, a couple take an approach of creating really obnoxious noises with their voices, because I refuse to call some of that "singing". The melody is kinda catchy in a way though. Not something I'd ever remember or even want to listen to of my own free will, but it gets the job done. If only there were a job that allowed you to animate shit properly called an animator or something. Then you'd fix the video as well.

I was hoping that, when I shat on both the OPs for Re:Creators in the anime topic, people wouldn't nominate them. List spoilers: They both got nominated and neither did well. Oops. The vocalist here is just not good to me. There's also this reverb effect constantly accompanying her, which is particularly grating. The chorus is dull as all hell, doing absolutely nothing to hook me in. It sounds like a really lazy synth production that the composers were phoning in for a paycheck. There's nothing interesting or even good about this song, and seeing it hyped so much annoyed me because nobody was hyping Yuugure no Tori which is objectively better in every way. And I know that sounds like a pointless plug for a completely different song that has absolutely no relation to the show, Re:Creators, but I swear it's a crucial part of this write-up. Anyway sh0ut is bad, and the use of numbers to replace letters combined with spelling a proper noun with a lower-case letter is the most bullshit chuu2 dadanime fujoshibait thing ever.

Is the title really so confusing that it needs three separate spellings in order to get the point across? Like, I get that it's a Kirby song, damn. The song itself is pretty generic, all things considered. Generic is a good buzzword I like to use for things I don't like, because it can just be a catch-all for things that don't appeal to my tastes. The clearly male vocalist has this raspy smoker voice which is likely meant to sound BADASS but it's kinda funny. The male vocalist is comparatively really quiet, like he's trying to tell me a secret. That secret is probably that this isn't actually a Kirby song.
