From what I've seen it just comes down to AR15 is the boogeyman. Just like the street sweeper was back in the 90s. Despite the fact that gun was one of the worst semi auto 12 gauges I could think of. Since it looked scary it was demonized

actually yeah, they would have. the virginia tech shooter killed double than the florida one did and he used a glock 19 and a .22 pistol. in general most mass shootings are done with handguns. if all you wanted to do is walk into a school or a tightly enclosed room with a mass of bodies you are going to rack up a high body count no matter if its a rifle or pistol or even a knife under certain situations.

the only way someone cant rack up a really high body count with modern weapons are maybe bolt actions, single action revolvers and muzzle loaders. and good luck getting that far. columbine happened without "assault weapons" and that body count was with them letting students go.
