In all the coverage, nobody is asking the one question I don't understand. Why did the mom agree to let a stranger take her daughter to McDonald's? She let her go with them, then called 911 when they never came back. But she never said why she trusted this man that she had just met

It literally says he befriended her and offered to buy them clothing.

people don't usually let their kid go off alone with someone they just met though. if I was a parent I wouldn't do that, no matter how befriended I was. if I have only known you for 30 minutes, you can't have my kid.

they should have all gone together to get burgers. and to buy clothes. no matter what he said, he didn't have the right to be alone with the girl. nobody in the news wants to ask about this because it will make the mom cry and the reporter will look evil. but someone else besides me has to be wondering about this

It's a lapse of judgement but nothing much more than that. Just sadly a lapse in judgement that ended up hurting tremendously

Perhaps a mixture of lapse in judgment and desperation? Dunno if money was tight for the family but maybe the simple offer of clothing/help was enough for the mother to lose some common sense for that short moment.

Also she has lost custody of her other children since the kidnapping likely due largely to this, so I think there is no need to call her out on what she already know and has caused her life to fall apart, not only with completely losing her one child but also losing the ability to raise her other kids

gosh that poor family. poverty can make you do stupid things. plus if you look at him, he doesn't really look like a threat. she probably was just hoping someone had a shred of decency and really needed the help.

My parents did stuff like that all the time with me when I was a kid

Theyd leave me with people they barely knew at all. Some parents are just fucking dumb.

That shouldnt take away from the fact that this is a terrible tragedy and it benefits no one to look for conspiracy or throw blame at the mother, who is herself a victim as well.

several examples of how big a responsibility it is to have a kid(s). it is a responsibility larger then you really think.

my mom left me alone once when I was 5. she went to the store and came back and found me in the living room constantly turning around because I was trying to keep an eye on both doors into the living room, thinking some monster was going to enter. I actually remember that day but I don't remember why I thought that was going to happen

she didn't let me be home alone again until I was like 12 maybe

there was one good side. once my brother wanted to visit his friend that had just gotten a NES. and he didn't want to bring me but he had to cause we were home alone. so I got to see the NES too

I think I was ok to be home by myself in 3rd grade. The only problem I ever had was when I wouldn't move because I had to keep an eye on the hornet that came in the house once. Other than that, everything was fine...

I could stay home by myself before that sometimes. If my mom wasn't going to be gone long. I was really into the rules. And would just sit and watch a movie of something.
