then when they get to highschool they are expected to participate in club activites, afterschool activities, and community service or else they don't graduate. If an adult isn't supposed to do 8 hours of work a day then how can a kid handle going to school for 8 hours?

School, for a kid who dares to a play a sport with homework included can be a 60 hour a week job. I always scratched my head as a kid when I was finishing hour two of homework and took a bathroom break only to have my parents, sitting on the couch watching TV, say to me "Could be worse, you could have to work, like us!"

yeah, life in general has gotten better for my free time
after school, practice, homework, etc. I had maybe an hour or two for free time. in college I mostly got my schedule to be open (even had three day weekends some semesters) but the constant nag of "you should be studying" was in the back of my head so I didn't even enjoy my freetime as much as I should have
contrast to my career where once i've put in my time for the day i'm free to enjoy my money with no tests or obligations

What's more annoying is being there 7/8 hours and day and them still sending hours worth of homework home from multiple teachers. I get studying and projects are a thing but if my kid is there from 8 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon, why does he/she needs multiple worksheets from multiple teachers do in the next day? Add on extracurricular activities after that and your time is gone.

It's even worse when the days are shorter, you spend all day in that s*** hole then when you are finally out you got like 3 hours until it gets dark outside which sucks if you like to do outside activities that require a certain amount of light to do well.

I do think the last year or two of high school is pretty meh. I still think 18 is a good base adult age but at 16 youre basically ready to join the workforce or go to community college full time at least.

Did your schools not have shorter days as you progressed at least in high school?

By 12th grade, I only had about 4 hours of class. Would go in at 8 and be out by 12:15ish.

No, for me, in America, it was 8 to 3 from as early as I can remember to senior year. We definitely didn't get reduced school days as we progressed.

Guess it must have been an NYC thing. I sometimes wonder how school in the rest of country was. School is NYC was completely different to anything I'd see in media for the rest of the country.

Yeah, I assumed that you lived outside of the US when you made that comment because I never heard of anything close to that in the states.

I went to kindergarten in Staten Island, but then moved to Philly before 1st grade so my education was outside of NY.

Homework should honestly be phased out by the time you reach high school. At that point most kids are getting their first jobs and starting the transition to adult life. Overworking them is counter-intuitive.

I disagree, it gives you experience in pressure, stress, and deadlines, which is common in the working world. It also helps build time management skills.

Teenagers actually need almost as much sleep as babies and yet schools are forcing them to wake up at ungodly hours, keep them awake for way too long, and then shove a bunch of stuff after school to keep them awake further. And yet they wonder why students in earlier classes are in a less functional state than they are in later classes.

Now that's abusive, forcing people to try to conquer the natural rhythm of their own bodies.

I said fuck it and slept whenever possible. So what if I missed a bunch of homework assignments? I was in better shape in classes than my peers plenty of times.

Yeah what's backwards about forcing kids to do activities that have nothing to do with their education? It's bad enough our educational system is damn near crippling (especially in Texas, lol), now we gotta make sure these entitled brats know how to do arbitrary tasks too!

We weren't required to be in clubs, but we were required to do community service. I fail to see any issue with that at all. As for clubs, I imagine the purpose of that is to allow students to learn/be involved in something that's not just strictly scholastic. Besides, it helps bolster their applications for college. (Must have spaced out on my edit)

This was back in 2003 and yes, education standards have significantly fallen since then. Still, I fail to see what's entitled about doing community service. Where do you live at anyway?

I think when applying to colleges in highschool, my school was always pushing us to be well-rounded. Making us play sports, act in school plays, even doing student government. All on top of the 5+ classes we had and the hw assigned after. All so we look better on college apps

I've never felt as if the "standard" 7-8 hour, 5 days a week, work/school time was ever necessary. This is easily proven for school, as the average college course is generally approximately an hour or so, & only meets 2-3 times a week. Part of the purpose for grade school is just babysitting & busywork.

For work, I'd say it's partially a holdover from "production" based economies, such as farming & factories where more time meant more 'X' was possible. It's relatively pointless for a lot of industries, given we run more on skills & service based work. Even then, a lot of jobs eventually handing out pointless work mostly because "you're there" & so you aren't "getting paid to do nothing" regardless of how relatively meaningless the "something" is.

I actually had to stay at school later because my mom got off work at 4:30 and the buses didn't have a route at my grandmas house so... was in after-care until high school. Sucked.

The most bullshit thing has always been the concept of homework. Like, listen bitch, you have me sitting in your class for 8 hours a day and you are now making me go home to enjoy my 4 hours of free time get cut in half to potentially 2 hours of free time because you're too inept to teach shit in a timely manner?

Fuck, that, shit. When that bell rang, I was going to eat cereal, play games, and talk to friends over which cheerleaders we'd not pull out of.

during my high school year. seniors could get off at about 1:30pm if they had a job or to work on the pacifica project (50 hours of community service). it wasn't so bad before. now they gotta do that and pass finals on subjects taken in senior year.

seniors had that privilege provided they were close to reaching 24 credits during the 4 years of school (could fail 8 classes) in electives and still passed.

Yeah I dont know what you guys are talking about. School was not 8 hours where I lived. It was much closer to 6 hours, including lunch and things like gym and band, and 6 minutes between each class to walk there (which adds up to an additional 40 minutes of non class time...with 40 minutes for lunch it meant that classes weren't even 5 hours of the day) . High school was 7:20 to 1:40, so Id be home by like 2:15 PM. Elementary school was 9:15 to 3:15, 6 hours flat.

Sports and clubs were for fun if you wanted to do it

vacation time was the best. got to stay home and play video games while doing the chores here and there.
parents were pretty lax long as one isn't getting into trouble or doing bad in school.

think high school ran for about 7 hours. lunch and the 10 min break times included. every tuesday or wendnesday in senior year i didn't have to go to school till about 10am because of study labs.
