I thought that was loosely based on some truth, maybe? There are actual white fighters who have won championships in Muay Thai events. (I dont know if any had been in prison, though.)

The film is fairly aware of the white saviour trope it mucks around it and takes neat steps to mitigate it, but people like to pretend its the same as all the other trash where a white person goes to Asia and saves the world like that new garbage film with Matt Damon.

Last Samurai is intelligent with its handling of that problematic issue, even if it does succumb to it. I just wish people would make allowance for that is all.

Also, America was literally involved in ending the samurai era so it's really not as egregious to put them closer to that conflict as people make it out to be.

Non-Japanese Yakuza? Are you kidding me? The history of the Yakuza themselves is related to a disenfranchised racial subclass within Japanese society. The echoes of that are still present in the organizations and in how the state itself interacts with the Yakuza. And they're going to insert an edgy white boy in that mess, I can totally imagine the modern Yakuza putting up with that. This is worse than that time Tom Cruise was the Last Samurai.

Side note: I really don't understand why the samurai in the final days of the shogunate are viewed so favourably. The only thing they fought for was their own privilege. They're literally lauded for not checking their privilege.
