I consider myself more on the liberal side, but I really want a handgun for self defense in my own home, and want a rifle because they look so damn cool.

Sorry, you are officially a nut. Nothing wrong with wanting one for defense, but buying anything "because it looks cool" puts you in the nut category.

Speaking of defense, a coworker strongly recommended I buy a tactical shotgun for home defense, instead of a handgun. He recommended I buy a handgun if I want to conceal carry.

Depends where you live. Or rather what your house is made of.

Shotguns with definitely do the job, but if you miss, buckshot will go through your walls, your neighbor's walls, and your neighbor. Several of them.

A pistol is smaller, less cumbersome, and is only one projectile at a time. You do have to get pretty decent with aiming however. Smaller fulcrum point leads to larger errors.

alright well here we go.

if you want a basic home defense means and never owned a firearm then get a shotgun. theyre easy to use and can use a lot of different shells for all kinds of situations. if youre cheap get a Maverick 88. if you want something a little better then the Mossberg 500. if you want one that you can count on in any scenario then get a Mossberg 590a1. You can go the semi-auto route, but they require a little bit of extra know how and can be expensive for a good one that you can trust your life on. but if you think that might be something you want then the Beretta 1301 Tactical and FNH SLP, niether are cheap, but they will get the job done well. if you got money to burn and want the holy grail of shotguns then the Benelli M4 has you covered.

For handguns the Glock tends to be the default starting handgun. its simple to learn on and works. Glock 19 is the most popular and tends to fit most hands well. the M&P9 is also a great choice (i like it more than the glock, but its a little more complicated). with those you also have the Beretta 92fs, CZ75, HK P30, Sig P320 and various others which are all great choices. something else to consider if you want an all in one (home defense and concealed carry) is to get a sub compact like a Glock 26, M&P9c or CZ RAMI. these guns are small enough to conceal and can still use their big brothers larger magazines so they can pull double duty. personally i swear by CZ, but it all comes down to what fits you best. of which more so with pistols than any other firearms you NEED to get out there and hold them and see how they feel. goto a range and ask to see several and how they feel. preferably try them out too. also .40 and .45 are meme rounds :)

for rifles the obvious choice is the AR15. very easy to shoot, exceptionally versatile and highly customizable. starting rifles are the Ruger AR556 and M&P Sport II. if you want to step it up to something that you can count on in any condition then get a Colt 6920 or a Spikes Tactical. if you plan to jump into Afghanistan then bump it up to a BCM or Daniel Defense. you can go higher than these but the differences are negligible for the prices. if you think you might want an AK dont go lower than an N-PAP or WASR10. if you want something nicer then Arsenal and Vepr are what you want. generally speaking tho an ak is an ak, there all going to work and hold up well. also maybe consider a Ruger Mini-14. Not as good as an AR, but they tend to get overlooked during scary assault weapon bans and draw less attention.

if you want some extra power or range you can look into some .308 rifles like the M1A (the scout squad is a nice middle ground) or SA58. not cheap, but they will fuck someone up out to 800 yards and holds a good amount of ammo. you can get AR10's, but in my expereince they tend to be far more hit and miss unless you drop serious cash on them. if you want long range precision shooting id recommend a 6.5creed, 300win mag or a 338 lapua rifle but dont expect those to be all that cheap. if you just want a nice simple bolt action then savage rifles are quite nice and priced well.

all that said if youve never shot a gun before i recommend picking up a cheap .22 rifle like a marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 and learn the fundamentals first. very cheap to shoot too and dont under estimate 14-25 rounds of .22 going at an intruder.

You think it's a better idea to rent a lower caliber rifle at the local range for a couple shoots to get used to it, then buy another gun?

Shotguns are the best tools for home defense if you are an inexperienced shooter. Handguns and rifles require more precise shots to be effective without accidentally killing the cat or putting a few rounds into your neighbors house.

I've become a 1911 nut as of late, so don't listen to my opinions

I think its is funny when people are like "get a glock or an m9" like there ain't 100,000 choices now for reliable 9 or 45 cal pistols out there now.

a taurus pt92 is about the same as a m9. really since beretta started using all plastic parts and shit I think that a pt92 might be slightly better.

anything made by HK, Colt, Glock, Springfield, FN Herstal, Canik, S&W is gonna be reliable. Anything metal made from Sig is gonna be nice too but run you a pretty penny (like a colt or HK).

HK have a new plant in Georgia up and running and their vp9 is going for around 500 bucks as of late. Those are fuckin excellent

edit: I forgot CZ. Prob best brand there is if you count the Dan Wesson 1911s.

You're pro NRA apparently TC, that kinda already makes you a gun nut lol

Eh... I like the idea of the NRA working to get rid of stupid gun laws, like people who have no criminal intent get in massive trouble for transporting a gun through a state with archaic gun laws; but I don't like the NRA because of their insistence that everyone and anyone should be able to get a gun with no problems.

What I would like is some sort of written knowledge exam and a practical exam to satisfactorily prove you know the basics (like a driver's license) prior to you getting a license to carry, a waiting period, and a mental/psychiatric checkup.

But I know that shit will never happen.

which ever you want to do including taking classes. you dont have to of course, but its nice to go into it with some knowledge. guns are not rocket science though. fallow the 4 rules of gun safety (and have them impounded into your brain) and there shouldn't be a problem.

the NRA are pretty shitty and i really despise them most of the time, but the hard truth is that until other organizations get big enough there is no other group that can get anything done for gun rights than the NRA right now. it sucks, but it is what it is.

I mean honestly this is all you need

4tpvlKX

this and a 4.25 inch one as well. It ripped ass through 4-5 wars.

you're limited to 8 round mags unless you get a stupid big double stack 2011 but it is the easiest pistol to shoot under stress and 230 grain hollow points tend to fuck things up. Also if you train you can reload quickly.

Their lower velocity and weight allow buckshot and pistol rounds to retain their momentum through hard obstacles. Rifle rounds on the flip-side will shatter from the sheer speed they're going at, dumping all their energy extremely quickly.

The same thing happens in water. Pistol rounds go much deeper in water than rifle rounds, which rip themselves apart.

at least you are most into historic stuff. If I had the extra money like you I'd have all the modern AR's and whatever modern AK I could snag in the US.
