I bought a PS4 but never saw a need to ever own a PS3.

I owned an Xbox 360 but have yet to see a single need to buy a Xbox One.

That pretty much sums up my view of recent gaming history. As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft basically shot themselves in the foot this generation, and burned off about 12 years worth of accumulated good will with constant fuck-ups and general asinine shenanigans. If they want to win me back next generation, they pretty much have to pull a miracle out of their ass while Sony trips over its own dick and lands face-first in the mud.

Not that a scenario like that is impossible - Sony fucking up with the PS3 is pretty much what turned me from a proud PS2 owner into someone who loved both the Xbox and Xbox 360 more in the first place (and before that, what turned me from someone who absolutely loved the SNES as the greetest console evar into someone who leapt onto the PS1 and never gave a single shit about the N64). I'm more than willing to "switch sides" if a console does what I want it to do and provides more of the games I want to play - I've never been much of a "brand loyalist".

Pretty much how I felt until I got my 4th RROD. Then I jumped back over to Sonys side.

To Microsofts credit, they handled the RROD situation about as well as they could have. Always offered replacements. But I got fed up after the fourth time. I had tried the towel trick to attempt to squeeze more life out of the last one, but the towel trick heated up the console so much that the tamper seal shifted. It was obvious that the sticker wasnt actually tampered with, the glue had heated so it had slid over. But Microsoft saw it as being tampered with and denied the claim on that unit. Think I was unlucky, though. Most people say theyve had two consoles die on them at most.

And full disclosure: my first PS3 died, too. Fairly early on, at that. Last gen was an absolute shit show as far as hardware quality goes.

I never had a RROD. The first 360 I ever bought is still the one I own and use (mostly to watch YouTube and play Minecraft, though also to occasionally replay older games now and then).

I had to buy a second original recipe Xbox due to drive issues, which caused problems playing newer games (specially, Halo 2 when it first came out). I also had to buy three PS1s, though in that case it was potentially less an inherent hardware issue, and more that my college roommates were animals and it got dropped on the floor multiple times.

Other than that, I've gone through about 35 years of gaming never really needing to replace all that many consoles. As long as you actually treat it right and don't smash it around or screw with it too much, most consoles are generally relatively sturdy.

Controllers, though, I use to go through like a motherfucker.

A large part of the problem here is the "Fairly early" part. Most consoles these days are absolute garbage for the early part of the release cycle, because that's when most of the tech defects and poor design come to light. If you hold off on buying a new console for a year or two, you'll start getting the versions where those problems have already been corrected.

This has been a problem for multiple generations, though - the same applied to the original Xbox (the aforementioned drive issue, for one). Unfortunately, the more sophisticated the technology becomes, the more fragile it tends to become.

On the other hand, my ColecoVision console from 1983 still works. And I could probably bludgeon a man to death with it and still play Donkey Kong afterwards.

My Atari 2600 crapped out 3 years ago. Had it from childhood. Still have it, but it any game I put into it wont display, just turns the screen gray.

Oh, and when I mentioned the PS3 dying fairly early on, I meant early on from when I bought it. Id had 360s for years, and the slim PS3s had already been out for a while when I jumped from the Microsoft ship. I do agree with you about the early consoles being pretty much test runs these days, just pointing out that in my particular case it was a PS3 that shouldve been one of those that had the kinks worked out by then.

The launch PS4 I bought is still working, fingers crossed. Probably just jinxed myself lol

As of now, ps4 I guess

All of the ps3 games that I loved have been brought to the the pc/ps4, except for demons souls.

Even dragons crown, which was a pretty niche title, is coming over to the ps4.

Considering the fact the PS4 is still going this is a unfair comparison. With that said I still say the PS4. Even more so with all the remasters it has and will continue to get.

From the top of my head:
PS3:
LittleBigPlanet
Assassins Creed Series
Red Dead Redemption
Mass Effect series
Uncharted games - Also available on the PS4
The Last of Us - Also available on the PS4
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 - Also available on the PS4
Batman Arkham Series - Also available on the PS4
GTA V - Also available on the PS4
God of War 3 - Also available on the PS4
Bioshock series - Also available on the PS4
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor - Also available on the PS4

PS4:
- All the ones available on the PS4 above
- Persona 5
- Witcher 3
- Uncharted 4
- Horizon
- Watch Dogs series
- Far Cry Primal
- Assassins Creed Origins
- Kingdom Hearts 2.8

Ah shoot, I forgot about mgs4. That's another game that I liked that hasn't been ported.

So mgs4 and demons souls are the only ps3 games (that I can think of), that I like, that aren't on pc or ps4

I never bothered with the gran turismo series. MGS 4 can be added to the PS3 list or even the MGS series in general as I believe a collection made it's way to the PS3. The Phantom Pain is on both consoles too but I didn't think much of it. I also left out Skyrim that's on both consoles. Still these change nothing.

One thing Ill say, the PS3 has an advantage over PS4 in overall quality of indie games. Seems like the vetting process for indies has fallen off sharply on the PS4. Theres an awful lot of shitty games, shovelware, mobile ports... just a lot of crap games on PS4.

Lots of good indies, but lots of shitty ones, too. Even outright broken games.

PS3. Great library, and a great external hard drive for the Vita.

No need for a PS4, I'll probably get an Xbox One instead for games I want.
