Board 8 > Roller Coaster Tycoon 2: 1v1 Challenge

Phew, this video took an absolute ton of work. But I think we pulled it off.

It's a brand new series we're starting called Versus Quest, where we take a game you wouldn't normally compete in and put our own competitive spin on it. First up is the classic RCT2. Who can create the better park in 2 years?

We setup a Mario-Party like Star system, where certain tasks award you stars. As well as 10 hidden "Bonus" stars that are slowly revealed to the audience as the series progresses.

I hope you guys like it, we're trying to do something relatively new/original and we're quite proud of the product that came out the other side.

I finished it. I think it's a LITTLE tough to follow both screens at the same time, but it's a really great concept. I think, visually, RT2 just isn't super-compatible with dual viewing. That said, I subbed to follow this.

Awesome! Thank you so much. And yeah, we're already talking about other games we could do something similar with this. We're thinking maybe DOOM with some added handicaps, or maybe do an RTS but the player has to satisfy a really weird requirement that we inflict.

Yeah it was a little difficult to follow, also because I'm bad at recognizing voices and had trouble knowing who was talking (left? right? neither?). But it was definitely good fun, and I'm excited for the next episode.

Man, I would totally be on board with doing an older strat game like Brigandine and having some sort of race with obscure requirements

That's fair, and it's been a criticism I've heard in the past. Just means you have to watch us more! :P

If you're looking for other challenges in popular games:

Super Mario 64 had the Green Demon Challenge. Pretty much, you know those floating 1-Ups that home in for you in certain levels after you climb a tree or whatever? The challenge is to collect eight red coins and get its star while the 1-Up chases you so you have to outrun it and dodge accordingly. I could do it on every level except Bowser's second stage, do it's possible but hard and pretty funny to see how stressful some moments can be while doing it.

I also have a simple one in the SSB-series that's my warm-up: how fast can you kill a Level 9 Bowser? I usually do 3/5-stock, but you could customize that too -- maybe do one life, maybe fight Jigglypuff, maybe keep score as ya'll one-stock through the whole cast, whatever you like -- I just have fun warming up with fast ass-whoopings against the AI.

I'm not sure how far you are into planning future episodes, but you should do a bingo challenge. Basically have a bingo card with missions/objectives (maybe with input from subscribers) and try to fill a row/column/diagonal (you could even make it two lines if they are too short). Also don't reveal the bingo card to the players until it is time to play for more randomness.

Been binging the nuzlocke as I write up some scripts, so this was quite the pleasant surprise! I do admittedly find it hard to follow this game in specific just due to the nature of how small the screens have to be, but I felt you guys did a good job mentioning when someone was doing something and hypothesizing strategy for roller coaster building, really made you seem knowledgable about the game and helped me along as a viewer. Interested to see where you take it and good work on the success! Hoping you guys take off a little more from this.

Harrich, we thought about doing the Green Demon, but we figured we would try to stray away from gimmicks that other Youtubers have done. Try something more original.

I am just one of the commentators, Player 3, Tarvould. I think the more you watch of us the more you will associate the voice to the person.

Kamekguy thanks for that feedback. I felt the commentators were very necessary for this run since it is quite difficult to follow two screens at once. Glad that paid off!

I'm really taken aback at how well this episode is being received. It's now almost DOUBLED our previously most watched video. And the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. I'm quite proud of my team at the moment. I hope we can really ride this wave to better stuff!
