I've had a few jobs in the last 10 years and each raise or new job that paid more I was happy with for like 4-6 months then my attitude was like "meh whatever". Right now I am making my highest ever at $20/hr. Like I said I was super happy now I don't think it's anything special. Just need to know if I am taking $20/hr for granted and just be happy with that for now or if I should be actively looking for a new job that can pay more.

I'm not sure how you could survive in the Bay area on 20 an hour.

Better in some places in Cali than others. Really depends on what city you plan to live in.

The Bay Area is a huge no...Towards the valley is slightly better but still not ideal. You'd get by but not without a struggle.

Barring the bay area that's fine for a lot of California. That said you'd probably still need a roommate due to rent being so shitty.

Some people I know live almost pay check to paycheck renting single rooms and they seem happy and have survived like this for years. Not trying to say you're wrong but I have seen people get by with similar pay

That's good on them, I would personally hate living paycheck to paycheck. Seems like so much stress, I prefer having a nice disposable income with every paycheck.

I think the median income for single individual males is somewhere around 32-35k. So you're making more than that. Congrats!

Places like Cali, N.Y., and Hawaii are notoriously expensive to live in though.

Very true. If he lived in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and several other states the 40k would certainly be a modest wage. Particularly if he had a significant other also making just as much. That's 80k, a decent amount over the national median for household

You are at that spot where its dependent on where you live.

Most of California, probably the "scraping by" category. Parts are cheaper where it would be saving a bit but still feeling tight, aka middle class in America.

Major cities across the US it would be between how do you survive to middle class.

Fly over states in non-major cities, you would be doing middle class, better than some, worst than others.

You'd be fine in my area of Eastern North Carolina.

The Raleigh/Garner area might be a little pricey though.

Anyway I always figured one would have to make a $100 a hour to live in California.

Like isn't a pack of smokes $10 a pack or a 12pk of cheap beer $30 ?

Can't see why one would pay like $50,000 a year just for rent.
