Ehhhh, FMA Brotherhood as a whole is better than Hunter X Hunter at least thus far. I've been almost so upsold on HxH that so far it has honestly been a disappointment.

I don't understand why people dislike Greed Island so much. It's fantastic shounen storytelling. Maybe it's the tonal shift? Or maybe it's the fact that the TCG system deviates too much from the HxH norm?

1. They do a poor job of actually explaining the game. Perhaps that's an issue with the dub as opposed to the sub, but I often times had no idea what was going on, why certain cards work a certain way versus not, etc. etc.

2. The context of how this particular area of the world works compared with the rest of the world. I left the arc thinking that they must have the power to basically rewrite the laws of physics and reality on this island because "lol, we're that strong with our use of Nen", when the series before this point had very clearly defined the powers we were talking about.

3. It felt more like the whole arc was just to show how crazy stupid powerful Ging and friends were, to be able to make a place like this exist and also to have every single card they made that was ONLY supposed to work on this island also work in a way in real life (since you can take ANY of the cards as usable items)

4. It only really introduced one character that really had any baring on the series (Bisky) moving forward. The rest were basically plot convenience or cannon fodder

5. It left us with no resolution to the Spiders, not knowing if Hisoka found a way to give the leader his powers back. That narrative is far more interesting than "LOL, it's a video game/card tournament arc!"

Greed Island was a weak arc, I won't disagree there. It did have a pretty good antagonist though.

Honestly, Hunter x Hunter starts off pretty weak. It didn't really get good until Yorknew City, then shit got really good, then there was the Greed Island Arc and that wasn't the best. But the Chimera Ant arc makes up for all of it, believe me.

Yorknew City and Chimera Ant are the two best arcs in all shounen. Lap it up, daddy.

Greed Island was a weak arc, I won't disagree there. It did have a pretty good antagonist though.

I think some of that context it provided was pretty important (especially with regard to Ging). Though it may be the case that the sub comes across better, since I didn't have an issue understanding the way it was all supposed to work. More importantly, it kept the focus on Gon and Killua, who are the quintessential main characters of the series.

Also, I think any forced resolution of the Yorknew Arc would have hurt that arc overall, which benefited precisely because it was so anticlimactic.

If they would have moved into the Chimera Ant Arc directly from Yorknew, I would agree with you. However, you move from something incredibly important and character defining to what amounts to a throwaway arc that is ALL designed to transport Gon to either Kite or Ging takes away all momentum built to that point.

Greed Island is more important to Gon and Killua's development than Yorknew.

In fact, Yorknew probably has the least relevance to the overall story of all the arcs. People like it because of its strong tonal shift and the fact that its an interesting side trip with some popular characters. The Spiders are interesting, but they aren't really important. Their purpose from an overall perspective is to showcase the power and diversity of Nen abilities. Kurapika's mission is interesting, but impacts nothing.

I really like Yorknew, don't get me wrong, but people overstate its importance to the series. It's mostly just an interesting aside, much more so than Greed Island.

And this is why I have FMA Brotherhood as a better anime. The whole series was excellent and felt like it built to an amazing climax. HxH felt to me like it was going the same route and then took a turn on a dirt road that just took way too damn long to find its way.

Don't get me wrong, HxH is like, an 8.5/10 right now. But if I can't give Death Note a 10/10 because of a few bad episodes at the end, I can't give HxH a 10 for an entire arc that I honestly wished they would have skipped entirely. >_>

Also the main reason why I like Chimera Arc so much is because it makes scnes where fucking nothing is happening feel so fucking hype, and it develops characters that at first you would nto even give a shit about like Welfin to just have one of the best payoffs with his one word scene, it also introduces one of my fav characters of all time "of course its HER" and makes her silly lines pwoerful as fuck because of all the context.

And maybe its just me but I really, reaaally like the parts where they go full narration mode because they really get into the characters head and what they are thinking.
