Idahol Officials have EUTHANIZED a snapping turtle which has been the centre of the investigation over a biology teacher gave a Live SICK PUPPY to eat in front of students!!

Robert Crosland, the teacher at Preston Junior High fed a sick puppy brought by someone who wanted him to feed the sick puppy to his turtle..and so he did in front of 3 students after class ended according to Superintended Marc Gee

The Idaho State Dept of Agriculture says snapping turtles are an invasive speciese and require a permit as they seized the turtle and killed it on Wednesday

Security is now brought in after people have vague threats against the school after learning of this news...

The school superintendent said the administators had been informed of the "regrettable circumstance involving some of the biological specimens"

Robert has not been given the boot for his "strange actions" which students said he's been doing for years as he's fed live animals to his snake or turtle.

The 3 students said that he's also fed guinea pigs to snakes and described it as the "circle of life" and added that humans were at the TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN..they also said that he was a "popular" teacher there

One of them said "He is a cool teacher who really brought science to life..i loved his class because he had turtles and snakes and other cool things. He killed the dog in the most humane way and it was already sick so he ended its suffering so i don't see what the big deal here is"

It's unclear why Crosland wanted to have the puppy die ALIVE but the superintendent said they are now making sure this doesn't happen again

Do you think it's okay to feed a turtle a live puppy because it was "sick" anyway??

Huh. You gotta ask why we value the lives of puppies over something like mice. And these animals being fed living things is normal so I don't see the issue there. Kind of stupid to say it's wrong to let a puppy be eaten by a predator and then kill the animal yourself

Well, there's a bit of a difference between "let a puppy be eaten" and "feed a puppy to a turtle."

"Let a puppy be eaten by a predator" would suggest you're walking by and just decide to do nothing... Not that you actually facilitated it yourself

yeah, but e.g. buying live mice to feed them to pet snakes is common. my sixth-grade teacher did this and there was no outcry (besides a group of us declaring that we were "pro-mouse" in completely ineffectual protest). point is, it's exactly what this teacher did with different animals.

The difference is that certain animals, such as mice and fish, are bred specifically for that reason, much like animals that we eat.

Dogs are not bred as a feeder animal, so it's not really the same thing.

EDIT: Not to mention that snakes eat mice in the wild. Dogs aren't typically in a turtle's diet.

Also the use of live mice is mostly tradition (it's extremely rare that snake completely refuses to accept killed feed, but it does take some training to entice the snake), does wind up inhumanely done with the standard approach taken by snake owners and presents an excess danger to the snake.

There is zero reason for live feeding a snapping turtle.

EDIT: But yeah, it's stupid that the turtle was euthanized.

The only reason I can think for having it euthanized would be if the turtle had become a danger due to developing a taste for things outside of its natural diet.

Snapping turtles do not eat dogs. They eat fish, snakes, frogs, plants, bugs, etc. Introducing a different kind of living animal into its diet could potentially make it dangerous to other animals of the type, or hell, even small children. Or even if it wasn't a danger, it's possible it wouldn't go back to eating what it normally eats in the wild and thus couldn't be returned to the wild because it'd just die, anyway.

Any other reason is dumb.

Whoops, I missed that. That's certainly the reason.

But yeah, you also have the fact that dogs don't constitute a normal diet for them and he didn't even know what the puppy was sick with, potentially introducing pathogens that otherwise could have killed the turtle.
