It's easy to go through our lives living in the US without really realizing or appreciating how fucking humongously big it is. It's crazy.

I guess most people don't do a cross country road trip when they are 10. I take for granted that my dad was in the army. I am always amazed when I meet people who have lived their entire lives in one state.

I read a story about a guy who had never seen the ocean who then enlisted in the Navy to try and become a Navy SEAL, and he ended up making it.

He had never seen the ocean before, and he was still able to get through all the stuff they have to do in the ocean. That's badass.

I'd call you lucky in that regard. I'm sure it came with its own issues and stress for your family, moving around so much, but you got to see and experience a lot of different places that most others won't. Maybe in their lifetime, even.

You don't have to be "rich" to go see the ocean if you're in a coastal state, but some families are so poor and have that as such a low priority that it can happen. Like if you're some poor migrant farmer in Central California then it's totally possible.

one of my best friends had never left a 45~ mile circle around the city we live in, and if my church did not send us on a "free" mission trip to a coastal city he probably would have never seen the ocean as his family was dirt poor and he had no desire to "waste" money on traveling

maybe. it was always just in America. I used to sometimes meet other army brats who spent part of their childhood in other countries and I was always jealous of them. we never got stationed overseas. ONE TIME we almost were stationed in Japan but plans got changed at the last minute. it would have been when I was a tiny child anyway. like 2 years old

and one time it was considered briefly for my dad to go to the middle east somewhere I forget. but I think he might not have been able to take us with him.

An old friend is married to someone in the army. They don't have children, just pets, but first he was stationed in Hawaii for a few years. They're in Japan now. I'm jealous.

if you have enough money to buy enough gas you can see the ocean. and lots of people live in a state that touches the ocean. for many americans, all it takes is like 5 hours or less of driving and they will see the coast.

True. But if you live in a central area of a large country it could easily be much more accessible to visit another country. And especially so if you're in a landlocked country. See my initial post. Bad topic.

the title mentions americans. the topic is about americans not seeing the ocean, not humans not seeing the ocean. we know there are landlocked countries. but TC was talking americans who should be able to visit it. more than half the country lives on the east coast, within several hours of the coast.

ive seen the ocean from Hawaii, Southern and Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, New York, Florida, and the Caribbean.

Caribbean is the nicest, then Hawaii, then Florida, then California.

I know people say california is known for its beaches and coast, but honestly its beaches are complete shit compared to the truly nice beaches of the world like the caribbean.

I mean, the caribbean beaches blew me away, absolutely stunning to see in person. And the best part is the weather is always super nice and the water is warm. I mean, screw california and even hawaii. Everyone should see the caribbean beaches in person at least once in their life.

Me too if you don't count the US. But I also grew up a half hour from the border and have rarely lived more than a few hours from it. So I feel like going to Washington doesn't count. Lol.

Working 2 jobs to be able afford living expenses , gas, and any hiccups like car maintenance or appliances breaking down or kids need money for school projects. Also they get very few days off so days off are dedicated to running errands and doctor appointments and chores.
