The moral of the story is that even in the zombie apocalypse, adults treat kids like crap. That's why it's a prequel to Persona 5.

I sympathize with the adult characters because they were turned this way by necessity

also yeah this may be my problem because I don't sympathize with them since I don't think this was a crime of necessity

I guess I can see it both ways. Pretty much every post-apocalyptic story I've heard of tends to deal the struggle of survival versus that greater yearning to "live." Every story beats us over the head with the philosophy that the compassionate people die early while the cunning and merciless get to survive in a world without compassion.

So you can argue that the survivors changed because they had to survive, or they survived because they were assholes all along and "reaped the benefits" of being thrust into a world where their asshole tendencies immediately benefited them.

I sympathized with all of the adults except those in the cannibal town. Grow some crops or something, sheesh.

this is probably why I'm not a big fan of the post-apocalyptic (particularly if zombies are involved) setting in general

this is giving me a new appreciation for FFVI's post-apocalyptic setting

I actually really enjoy post-apocalyptic settings for that very reason! It's fascinating to me to see broken people, each with a small remnant of humanity in them, face off with each other.

Like Joel is pretty much a monster, but for everything he is I do think he loves Ellie. It's a selfish, unhealthy love, but I think it's there. Seeing a man desperately cling to a shred of authentic good in his life while doing unspeakable things to maintain it (all the while interacting and conflicting with others trying to protect what's left of themselves) makes for some compelling situations IMO.

Tommy's village was shown to prove that how Joel/Tess turned out wasn't a necessity. And the hospital in particular was to show how you can be pretty monstrous/inhumane by some form of necessity like the Fireflies and Marlene, but that Joel definitely goes beyond that.

Yeah, Tommy's village was the feel-good story. Dude got hitched and helps lead a community of 20 families. You also get the sense that he isn't nearly as fucked up as Joel.

I wonder if they ever considered making "happy" DLC that focuses on Tommy's journey.
