That's called emotional blackmail and it's not love. It's also not productive to them getting better. 99% of people who make excuses as to why they shouldn't kill themselves would never actually do it. That's not how a suicidal mindset works. They believe their loved ones/the world would be better off if they weren't alive.

That's why it's kind of shitty to call people who kill themselves "selfish." Their brains are not wired to see the hurt they will cause.

Yes, people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts can be manipulative. Duh. Congrats, the sky is blue. But if they need to be manipulative to stay alive, then why would I care to target them for being manipulative?

There's more than one kind of suicidal person. You can be in a place where you get repeated and uncontrollable visions of your own death and a visceral feeling that it would be the best thing to do. Where suicide isn't so much a choice as it is to give up fighting against it. For people like that, clinging to the realization that it would hurt others might very well be the one thing that lets them hold on. They might very well be getting help at the time, they might not even actually want to die. But suicidal ideation can be a neurochemically physical problem more than a mindset at times.
