Mario Bros didn't really influence anything and basically got tossed to the side once Super Mario Bros came out. However, I'm still not particularly sure that Super Mario Bros is the most influential of it's own generation, that probably goes to Super Mario Bros 3.

For the SNES/Genesis that's probably going to be Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest as it started the JRPG boom on the PS1 later.

For the PS1/N64: I'd say Mario 64 as a rush of 3D platformers came along with it.

PS2/XBox/GC: However you feel about the game Halo was unquestionably the most influential game at the time, outdoing Half-Life and others, despite many games being flat out objectively superior to Halo, no first person shooter shook gaming the way Halo did and the effects it has are still seen today.

PS3/360/Wii: Wii Sports, needs no explanation

Even though it's far from my favorite Zelda, I'd maybe put ALttP for 4th gen.

Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest both originated on the NES?

Yes but the popularity didn't explode until the Playstation 1 due to the high quality and brand reputation of the SNES games.

Yes but the popularity didn't explode until the Playstation 1 due to the high quality and brand reputation of the SNES games.

But DQIII/IV were just as well-received as the SNES FF/DQ games bar FF6 - Dragon Quest III in particular is infamous for the literal hundreds of truancy arrests its launch on the Famicom caused in Japan.

Publications such as Nintendo Power & the general critical reception for FF4/FF6 obviously helped FF7 with its commercial/critical success, but I'd still strongly disagree with the SNES games causing the JRPG boom. FF7 generated hype because of its then-next-level cinematics & strong marketing; the critical acclaim of its SNES predecessors only added to the hype.

I realize we're talking generations, but I'm just gonna list the relevant console for the particular game...

NES - Metroid
SNES - Street Fighter II
PS1 - Final Fantasy VII
Xbox - Halo
360 - Call of Duty 4
Current - PUBG

I based my choices on things that popularized specific (sub)genres to the point of oversaturation.

But are there as many successful knockoffs? BO4 and Halo 6 are rumoured to even be putting in battle royale modes.

I think this would be better broken down into genres as games often influence other games of the same genre as them. You can't say GTA influenced FIFA, or vice-versa, for example.

When it comes to platformers - Super Mario Bros. seems to be the most obvious choice. As for modern 3D platformers with puzzle elements it has to be Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
When it comes to open world games then GTA 3.
Action-adventure/stealth/storytelling - MGS1
FPS - Doom
TPS - RE4

That's ironic, considering LoL itself is a knockoff of DotA. Which wasn't at all a knockoff of AoS btw.

Pretty good list, specially street fighter, that is the only one i can't debate, but Metroid not so much, as i put in my list super metroid is more influential.
