Yeah, it's a bummer to have to give personal information like your cell phone number or an alternate email, but it's an extra layer of protection from others..

I rarely trust sites with my email, let alone my phone.

This.

If a site or service absolutely demanded that I provide a valid phone number or else be unable to use it, I would adamantly refuse to use that site or service, ever.

Alternate e-mail is somewhat acceptable - exclusively for existing e-mail - less for security reasons, and more because it's pretty much inevitable that, over a long enough period of time, I will eventually forget a password and wind up locked out of a ton of stuff. I've used password recovery too many times to be entirely complacent about it.

At the very least it should be an option with only high profile websites making it a requirement. I can see it being a potential inconvenience for users but from the service end, if it means less resources spent on handling lost/forgotten passwords or compromised accounts, it is probably worth it.

Kinda the opposite for me. I was updating the password for a life insurance website and the password was limited to 12 characters. My passwords on average are 16 characters long with numbers and capital letters. What bugged me about that website though was when changing it I had to use a minimum of 18 characters but for some odd reason when logging in, the password window was limited to 12 characters. Their IT department eventually resolved that issue.

I just want websites to be consistent across the board on what can or cannot be used. Some allows symbols while some don't. Of those that allow symbols, some requires it and some don't.

Recently my messenger app on my phone was screwing me up. I was logging into my bank and was texted a security code. By chance the code had "XD" in it but my app auto-converted it to an emoji. I thought the emoji was an error and wasn't entering the entire security code. Eventually I just copy/pasted the entire message and realized where the mistake was.
