knowledge of system internals now.

Merely administering the system used to be good enough, but now the industry wants everyone to be some kind of badass.

It's not hard to learn, and thankfully I was always already into it, but firms are going to have an increasingly more difficult time hiring if they don't chill out and just find competent people willing to learn, as opposed to senior-level, master's degree holding professionals for mid-level salaries.

You've got me fucked up if you think that I am going to provide you with world-class, top quality work and knowledge for a mere base salary, no bonus, and no equity/stock options.

I'll be goddamned if I have to move to some state where there are five black people to get that, as well.

Also everyone wants you to be a developer now.

DevOps ruined everything.

This world is sick.

I could see if I could just stick to C.

I'd probably enjoy that enough, but I have to use all of the "hot" stuff that looks cool in a GitHub repo.

I'm starting to get into the DevOps stuff myself. It's ok but a lot of knowledge to absorb.

Also examples of what you're talking about in your OP.

Well yeah, that's because everything is moving to "the cloud" now, so you'll need to provide something beyond that to compete.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. This is a pain in the software development world, especially if you do web development, because every jackass has his own perfect vision of the world and wants to reinvent the wheel, so you get a billion frameworks/languages/tools with tons of overlap. Of course employers demand that you know them so that they're using "the new stuff". Don't want to be left behind and get stuck using stable, well-tested, efficient technologies of old.

Everything a developer does, and also somehow being on an architect level . . . for 85% of the price!

But if you're in the sys admin/infrastructure side and learn a little Ansible, you can easily boost your salary by 30%
