My mom knew a lady whose grade-school daughter had cancer. Doctors said they had to amputate a leg.

The lady refused so she took the little girl to mexico for alternative treatments. Apparently a clinic over there said they know the cure for cancer.

The little girl died. It's just such a frustrating story. Urgh.

We get a lot of patients from Mexico, and the culture down here is basically that of "I refuse to ever go on insulin because it causes blindness".

Errm, no, it's your very advanced diabetes that causes blindness.

If you think private practice in the US is bad, you should see half of the plans we get when people cross the border.

Eh. Everyone on both sides are shills just trying to peddle their wares. The vast majority of what's out there isn't anything close to a "cure," it just helps to make you a little more comfortable as you waste away from an unidentified ailment typically caused by many, many years of self-neglect or overindulgence.

Really all you can do for yourself is maintain a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition, exercise, etc. Beyond that there's really no answers out there. Certainly not ones that are going to come from any sort of bottle or package.

I mean I don't wanna play the "Lymphoma" card

But yeah I have Lymphoma. From my understanding this wasn't something caused by my lifestyle. Just one day a white blood cell decided "fuck this I wanna be unique" and went crazy.

And the treatment for it, by all accounts, is designed to cure me. To rid me of it permanently. From what has been said, 90% of the time it works. And even then there's a plan B and C and D in place to cure it if plan A doesn't work.

So needless to say I disagree with this a lot. Naturopaths and alternative medicine is a scam. Actual doctors and modern medicine is there to cure you whenever possible, or if curing isn't possible then to manage your shit as well as it can.

"Both sides" aren't out there to peddle their wares. It's just one side.

That's fair. I was speaking mostly in general terms, obviously yours is a special case where only proper and extensive medical intervention has the potential to save you. For myself personally, I had to have an appendectomy when I was younger and without it I certainly would have died. I think that's where modern medicine shines. Emergency situations, healing fractures, operations, etc.

Although on the other side of it, there's always the saying "a pill for every ill." Visiting a GP will often result in having them sit there nodding with their prescription pad out, sort of half-listening while you describe your symptoms. There's a lot of guess work involved. They can order a lot of tests, but even those don't always determine the culprit. So it comes down to just managing the symptoms in an attempt to improve the quality of life.

Edit: Like, how many people do you know that are swallowing handfuls of pills every day and will have to for the rest of their lives? Most people's parents are like this, hell, some of your peers likely are as well. I have to wonder, is that really the best we can do?

That's because many diseases are congenital and are caused from errors in your genetic material. From a single cell that error has propagated into every organ in your body that is made up by billions and billions of cells.

Pills don't exist as some evil plot to keep people perpetually sick, they exist because scientists can't correct the DNA mutations as of yet, and a damaged gene will continually produced a defected product. Pills exist to counteract a continuous problem. If they could cure genetic problems, they would but it's hard as hell. Cells protect their DNA tightly for a reason you know, because if it was easy to manipulate DNA we'd be dead long ago.

There's also the problem of a bad experience when scientists did cure someone of a disease, but ended up giving them cancer as a side reaction of trying to modify and correct DNA mutations using viruses. Since then, research in that field has been very tightly regulated.

Theres a new guy at work whos all about the homeopathy and a Jesus freak. Former alcoholic so he feeds himself sermons all day via YouTube because I guess thats what it takes for him to survive. Hes a nice enough guy, but when he first brought up his homeopathy bs I lost a lot of respect for him.

Hell start talking about how he watched this documentary on YouTube about the truth about vaccines and I just stop listening because I know its all crap. One time I told him that it might not be a documentary and he got all defensive about it.

Hes also into this brand of supposed health food that delivers nutrients to your body using its natural pathways, aka digestion. Quackery at its finest.

The difference, besides actual knowledge, is that doctors don't make or sell the medicine they prescribe. That's a conflict of interest.

Plus, it helps if your practicioner actually knows the physiology, pathology and biochemical processes behind illness instead of explaining it as some kind of vitalism imbalance.
