I saw a handgun and a rifle being field stripped by a firearm dealer, and the rifle looks much more complicated.

That top one is legally considered a pistol, not a rifle. The barrel is less than 16" so they put a pistol brace on it instead of a stock.

If it had a rifle stock it would be classified as a short-barrelled rifle and it would be an NFA item.
