Ermine: Not as good as the first but still relatively decent. Drac's friends are pretty fun and most of the scenes involving them and trying to teach Dennis were enjoyable. There's definitely some misses on jokes and a few cringy scenes that kind of hold the movie back from being something that I actually enjoy. Particularly the ending fight scene and "climax" of the film. It feels just so random and thrown in that it kind of makes the whole thing feel weird and cringy. Especially Dennis fighting which just looked awkward and weird because of how toony he looks. I get that the Hotel Transylvania movies are supposed to be all laid back, goofy and silly but it definitely felt like they phoned it in with the ending of the film.

I want hundreds of werewolf pups. Such adorable rowdy little shits. <3

red: A sequel nobody asked for that actually kind of surprised me a bit. The movie gives us an interesting take of monsters integrating into a more modern, human world where monsters aren't really monsters anymore. It was oddly kind of an interesting bit of world building where I honestly didn't expect it, throwing in a message about old people dealing with changing times. The big downside to the movie is Mavis' end, her integration to the human world being glossed over just a bit compared to the other side of the story. I expected complete drivel with this sequel but it delivered much better, even if it isn't the most intelligent movie out there.

charon: It's hard to hate on this movie too much because of the asthetics. There are monsters, decently funny scenes involving them and good voice acting. The plot isn't terrible here but it isn't great either. It sort of reminds me of the premise of Incredibles 2 in a way, looking ahead. Older guy tries to take care of a baby and hijinks ensue? There are other good moments too like when Drac finally realizes it doesn't matter what his grandson is, so long as he is his grandson. Standing up to his father was a good moment. I'm a fan of Adam Sandler in this role, he does an excellent job with this character and at a time in his career where he's struggling, it's good to know he still can get laughs from me in this role. I dunno, in my opinion this franchise could probably be more than it is and I worry for its future with what's on the horizon.

Stifled: The first HT was a very average, yet enjoyable movie. The second one is equally as average and equally as enjoyable. I like the vampire/human dynamic. I like Vampire Sandler and his goofy buddies. I like hot vampire girl. But the movie as a whole? Its completely forgettable. I cant remember which things were in the first movie and which things were in the second movie. I know the kid related stuff was in the second one. But thats about it. They mash together. I know I liked them both and I have warm and fuzzy memories of watching them with Manda and Travis. But if you made me a Sporcle quiz right now that asked me to choose which moments were from HT1 and which were from HT2, Id fail unless they had pictures of the kid in them.

Traviss opinion: He sat with us on the couch and paid attention some of the time, which was cute. Then he hopped off the couch and played the rest of the time, which was also cute. Cute family moments are fun.

Snake: Another movie with diminished quality from the original. Flat storyline and repetetive jokes plague this one, but I still enjoyed the horror-themed aspect of it.

Genny: So it was... Alright. It didn't quite capture the magic of the first and I think a huge aspect of this was Mavis being a supporting character this time around. Her telling her dad she was expecting was one of my favorite parts of the movie though it brings up more questions than answers. How is dhampir babby formed? How is dhampir babby formed? How undead girl get pragnent? Of course the movie answers none of this. Dennis(ovich) is admittedly adorable, but sans personality but his werewolf admirer is easily the best new character. Sadly I just didn't like Drac's chemistry with anyone this time around aside from Mavis who's barely in the movie. The roadtrip with the other monsters was the weakest aspect of Hotel Transylvania 2 in my opinion.

scarlet: One of the most important components of a sequel is the creation of new stakes that renew a sense of urgency and inspire a feeling of necessity in returning to a familiar cast of characters.

Honestly, I probably should comment on this one, unlike how I've avoided chatting for most others. HT2 came with a massive flaw even from my odd way of critiquing things came into play. At the end of the first movie, the main monsters had to come to grips that no one finds monsters scary anymore. And they did, they opened the hotel to humans because they were fine being buddy-buddy with humans.

So... Why... Did they try to retcon the ending of the first movie through the whole sequence of events of trying to show off how the monsters scare humans to Dennis? This is like the one thing that agitates me in some sequels, just when they completely disregard growth and development of a previous installment for... nothing.

Stifled: Ok, look. Cars 1 and 2 were not my cup of tea. I wasnt in the hate camp, but they were a one and done watch for me. But Cars 3? Its everything I wanted the first two to be. In fact, lets take it a step farther. With Cars 3, you no longer NEED the first two. It gives you enough of the old plot that you know everything from the past that is necessary. I would even argue the flashbacks between Doc and Lightning in Cars 3 do a better job at building their relationship than the entirety of Cars 1. I went into Cars 3 scoffing, declaring it a cheap cash grab. But let me tell you, to feel that way is a disservice. This is classic Pixar, guys. They make you care about the characters this time. They make the side characters interesting and worth watching. I was impressed.

Traviss opinion: BEEP BEEP! He loves cars and was glued to the TV for this one. He was pretty much constantly making beeping and engine revving noises.

charon: Following the disaster that was the previous film, the Cars franchise returns with Lightning as the lead protagonist once again. The teaser for this film was somewhat dark, promising a move away from the previous format of Cars related media. It did indeed fulfill this promise, at least in my opinion. This story about aging and finding your place in life probably flies far above the head of the franchise's typical target audience, and for that alone I have a lot of respect for this film. Not only that, but the film is self aware of Lightning's popularity as a marketing tool. The best film within the franchise easi;y, for its characterization and the lack of Mater (by far the fewest minutes of screen time in any of the films), it's still not without a few flaws. The biggest issue is Lightning himself, as he hasn't really learned to appreciate others even after his growth in the first film. Despite that, I still think this is a solid offering and redemption of the previous sequel.

Inviso: I never hated the original Cars. It didnt light my world on fire, but it was never a BAD movie. It was justaverage. Cars 2, meanwhile, was a flaming dumpster fire and the worst thing Pixar has ever produced. Cars 3, however? Best of the thrillogy. For one, it goes back to the original movie in terms of its plot being more of a SPORTS movie than anything else. You take Lightning, who weve watched race as a cocky upstart, and you age him up into the old guy getting surpassed by all the new technology around him. And at first I thought the movie was gonna be a boring old guy tries and fails at the new tech, then succeeds by going back to his roots sort of thingbut it didnt go that way. Instead, Lightning realizes that he CANT beat the new guys, but he CAN help them to better themselves. He becomes his own version of Doc Hudson, and thats a nice twist that I didnt realize was coming until every near to its reveal. I thought it breathed some life into an otherwise average franchise, honestly.

Karo: In the third movie of the Cars trilogy, McQueen finds himself outpaced by a new breed of fast modern racing cars, and after a bad wreck he begins to wonder if he really has it in him anymore. He trains to get back in the game with the help of a female car by the name of Cruz Ramirez (thus finally answering the question of what happened to Ricky Bobby's last names). In many ways it feels like the true Cars 2, rather than John Lasseter's wet dream about what would happen if James Bond was a talking vehicle whose parents were related.

Speaking of the unholy one, Larry the Cable Truck is heavily reduced in screentime, and that fact alone makes it better than its predecessors, but the real thing that sets it apart is the likability of the characters. Yes that's not a typo. Lightning 'Douchenozzle' McQueen, quite possibly the most unlikable protagonist Disney has even created, is actually somewhat relatable in this movie. That's like parting the fucking Red Sea. However, it is the newcomer Cruz who takes the title of best Cars character and absolutely drives away with it.
It goes to show that the biggest problem with the Cars series wasn't that it starred automobiles, but rather that was a pandering jerkoff for little boys and NASCAR fans. Take that out of the equation and you have something that is at least watchable and is the perfect ending to the saga of Lightning McQueen, and lets hope Disney will leave it at that (they won't).

scarlet: Do you enjoy the sixth and seventh movies in the Rocky series? Now you can watch them mashed together for your viewing pleasure only this time, all of the characters are cars and the world they live in makes absolutely no sense if you give it any logical thought!

Genny: Can we ever have a Cars movie where Lightning doesn't revert back to an asshole who's obsessed with winning? Wait why am I asking for another Cars movie? Actually that reminds me of when char and I joked that Cars 4 would feature Lightning as the jerk dad after he and Sally bumped uglies- um... bumpers? The next generation of vehicles has to be made somehow right? Anyway Cars 3 is visually impressive and I like that you don't necessarily need to see the previous entries to get this story, but I can't help but feel like kids aren't the target audience here. You can't just pull a Toy Story passing the torch arc when Cars was never more than a cash grab.

JONA: I ended up fearing that this movie would end up like Cars 1 (yeah Im that weirdo that prefers Cars 2 despite both being bad). What I got was something that easily surpassed both. The story of Lightning getting surpassed by the new generation is intriguing and I really liked the dynamic between Lightning and Cruz and what becomes of it in the ending. The movie still had bad pacing problems like Cars 1 but at least the movie had good sense to change the locations every now and then.

red: It isn't saying much, but this is easily the best of the Cars movies. Why? Well, for a start, this movie minimizes Mater as much as possible. You hardly see him. Second, it absolutely ignores the fact that Cars 2 existed. While Cars 2 sucked what heart the first Cars had, this brings it back with a story about getting old. The Cruz and McQueen mentor relationship(Which works both ways) works better than McQueen and hicksville of the original. This is a far more tolerable movie than the past Cars films, though McQueen is still an unlikeable jerk, at least the supporting cast is improved and the ending isn't a message of "McQueen is a jerk but he gets to win anyway".

Johnbobb: Cars 3 was better than I expected. I expected very little, but still. It was a fairly dull, generic storyline about learning to be better revolving around a sport I dont even slightly care about. That being said, it wasnt offensively bad, like the bits I remember from Cars 2. Not something Id ever watch again, but also not something that made me want to bash my head in.

Ermine: Being better than both Cars and Cars 2 doesn't mean you are a good movie, but rather, just barely acceptable. Not too much to really say at this point on these films as I still don't care for any of the characters, or any of the new ones added to the film. The final 20-30 minutes were much better than the first hour of the movie and there was definitely much less Mater which is always a good thing.

Snake: Surprisingly the best Cars movie, but its still Cars, a boring bland entry in a boring bland franchise.

I say this every time Cars 3 comes up so I'll say it here since i intentionally left it out of my writeup. Disney cared so little about Cars 3 as an actual film that the movie was spoiled entirely by basically all of the promotional material.

Even the meet and greet at Disneyland, which Disney usually takes a lot of care for, was a big spoiler.

They cared nothing for it aside from selling toys. Which is a shame because it is easily the best Cars entry.

I understand the complaints about Lightning McQueen in the rest of the series, but I thought that in this film, his compulsion allowed for deeper storytelling. If you take away that compunction, that obsessive need to claim glory at any cost, you lose the entire film. And while some people will say, "Good, fuck Cars," the series is continuing to take McQueen in a pathetic direction, and that's a good turn for the character. Deconstruction is a valuable tool in storytelling.

Stifled: This is an animated masterpiece. There were times I forgot I was watching a cartoon because it had all the qualities of a truly great live action movie. In fact, if they make a live action version of this, I am so there. Despite Chico being a jerk at times and ruining everything, the love story between Chico and Rita still manages to be beautiful at every turn, even with the heartbreak. All of the characters were compelling in some way. Every scene was excellent and moved the story along, even that wacko Disney Acid Trip styled dream sequence. And despite the random sex and nudity being a little off-putting in an animated feature (in my opinion, anyway), even that was fine. Chico and Rita totally needed to bang, so whatever.

Traviss opinion: Strangely, he didnt pay any attention to Chico and Rita, despite some swinging music to dance to. He just played with his cars and ran around the living room. And before anyone asks, he was not looking when the naked conga was going down. I AM A GOOD DAD DAMMIT!

JONA: The artstyle of this movie is certainly odd but by the end of the movie, I found it really fitting and I cant think of how you would do this movie with anything else. The love story here is compelling and the movie shows its passion for its time period and the music at the time.

scarlet: A movie thats great, except when it isnt. The movie is all about feel. It wants to paint a moving picture in the truest sense of the word. The strongest aspect of the film is the sensation of time and place - Havana, New York, Las Vegas, all present, big, full of life. You can feel the Cuban heat and the New York cold, understand innately what the world of era was like. The plot is less a love story than a life story, and this is where the film begins to drag. The story is very common, low in stakes. As a viewer, I questioned why this story was worthy of my attention. And the end was a little unnecessarily rushed. However, There is an aesthetic beauty here that deserves a watch.
Rating: 62/100

Snake: The movie has a nice pleasant look to it, it really bursts off the screen with bright colors and very natural animation. I feel transported to Cuba as the film provides a rich atmosphere. The story feels very realistic and though jazz isnt typically my thing, I enjoyed its use a lot here.

charon: This was a nice surprise to me. I wasn't expecting much from this movie but I enjoyed the unique music and art style on display here. There's ample nudity here too, which surprised me a bit since I'm not sure how many animated films I've ever seen display it before (really on The Spirits Within's buttshot springs to mind). The story told is a bit like a telemundo production, where most of the characters have flaws and there's no true shining hero to the story. Chico himself is a bit of an ass and brings a lot of hardship on himself as well as others, but saying that it's nice to see a protagonist that isn't the model of perfection. He's portrayed as a real man, with real flaws that can be attributed to the society he's a part of. The jazz references here coinciding with reality are a nice touch and give the movie a unique and authentic feel. Even with the tragedy and sadness, I was happy to see the two main characters find some reconsilation by the end. A nice bit of "happy ending" for a film much unlike most on this list.

Johnbobb: Im a little torn on this one. The best takeaway here is the excellent soundtrack. If nothing else, the movie is pleasant to listen to the whole way through. The animation is a mixed bag. It can be really great at times, particularly in the car chase where everything is simultaneously smooth and detailed. Same goes for the jazz club, with great use of color to enhance the tone, and the dream sequence, with all the visuals overstylized. The rest can be pretty ugly though, with choppy animation and overly simple facial animation. The worst aspect is the story, though, with character motivations that are both predictable and inconsistent. Rita herself is rarely portrayed as more than a prize for Chico to ogle until about the last third of the movie. Its hardly a bad film, but I really just wanted more from it.

Karo: Continuing the tradition of such movies as Cynda & Quil and Toto & Dile, this movie follows the lives of two up-and-coming Cuban music stars.
Chico is like this creepy stalker asshole who is obsessed with a girl and won't take no for an answer. He follows her around everywhere until she finally fucks him and of course this makes everything worse. As the two of them find success in America, Chico's obsession continues, and it eventually ruins both of their careers.

Yeah I guess the ending is sort of touching, but the fact remains that a EDITED WORD like Chico doesnt deserve a girl like Rita in the first place.

Genny: Chico and Rita is something I would have enjoyed more if the male lead wasn't a bastard. Dude wasn't even famous yet and he cheats on two women. He kind of deserves getting betrayed by Ramn and all the other bad things that happen to him, but then it turns out his best friend doesn't do it for Rita's sake he does it for material gain and wow all the dudes in this movie are assholes, what am I supposed to get out of this? It's not exactly the feel good story of the year, but I do get they were going for realism. This doesn't make me enjoy it any more though. I also didn't enjoy the animation style, blending hand drawn with 3D is a hard mix to pull off. It never looks awkward, but it's never quite there either. At least the soundtrack and score are fantastic.

red: A cast of unlikable characters finds musical success despite the fact that they are all jerks and screw each other over at every opportunity. Were we supposed to root for Chico and Rita to be together? Because it sure doesn't seem like it. Rita is talented but Chico is mostly just a talented jerk that is in her way. Chico has a friend that is a jerk too and betrays him for reasons. Its not a good love story when all you can root for is the characters to fail.

Ermine: Really not my kind of film in more ways than one. I'm really not the biggest fan of jazz so while I really wanted to love the music in this film, it just didn't do it for me. The animation for the most part was very unique and quite nice. A very refreshing look... but that's probably as far as I can go for praise. Most of everything else fell fairly flat for me. I did enjoy the rather "happy" ending though. I was prepared for a much sadder and depressing end to the film but it honestly turned out pretty alright. Mostly a miss for me though.

Inviso: I dont understand why this movie was animated. I really dont. Because there are movies that tackle more mature themes, and do so in an animated setting. But the thing about animation is that typically its used because you want to create a world that could not otherwise exist on-screen. Either you want to use the defiance of physics, or you want to create visually unique characters that wouldnt otherwise exist. Chico and Rita feels like a standard biopic that we animated for some reason. I can understand the story, and Ill still rank it above some of the childish movies that felt like direct insults to my intelligencebut this was really boring and a waste of the medium.
