people somehow attribute NK's change to Trump like it's some accomplishment of his. Yeah, I didn't know throwing insults and childish name-calling at another world leader on twitter was so effective.

It seems to do with a personal change in heart by Kim Jong Un. To suddenly be so open to the world and the cameras is pretty questionable. Did he get some self-realization on his dictatorship or what?

He didn't. The US is giving him exactly what he wants--recognition as an independent country. There was a reason previous presidents didn't arrange to meet with him, and it wasn't because they were afraid of him.

He achieved the N. Korea dream of building a missile that can travel further than Seoul. After that it was pretty much all downhill from there. Now he's got plenty of time to do some soul searching and figure out what he really want to do in life.

We don't know if it's sudden, we do not know his or his governments inner workings and plans. Everything they let the outside world know or see is pretty calculated and planned.

Opening up NK to the world is not something that he decided over night. It's probably been an ongoing process going on behind closed doors.

But seriously, there are also reports that a second factory capable of producing fissible material has been restarted. This is likely a play for time while they produce enough nuke material for their hollow threats to have some actual weight behind them. That being said, we're constantly being told that we should try peace before war, so this feel like a right and fair series of steps as an alternative to further escalation.

because it really has nothing to do with him. It was South Korea that initiated the peace movement through the Olympics, with president Moon Jae-in delivering on his promise to reunite the koreas through peaceful resolution.

After that it all lead to more and more opening up. With South Korea only.

Trump took a diplomatic stance no other president has ever taken
He was callous and blunt with North Korea, something I'm sure they weren't expecting in all honesty
This new desire to meet is a) not new, they've always wanted to sit and talk with US presidents, and b) probably a way for the DPRK to scope out our president and figure out their next move

If there is a single thing Donald Trump has done right, if there's one thing I approve of his presidency, its his attitude toward North Korea.

The reason why nobody met with them is because it legitimizes them as a sovereignty (the CIVIL war is still going on remember) and sorta ruins the "tough" stance we take on the DPRK

nobody has ever threatened another war on the North so they are trying something a little different
but not that different

Normally, he could rely on trade with China to bail him out of sanctions, but him having to meet directly with Xi tells me that China is tired of cleaning up his messes.

Trump's lunacy has paid off though, regardless. I think NK actually worries he will just get mad one day and find a way to justify a declaration of war. It's not like Vietnam started over a real incident, so it's totally feasible. Without China, NK would collapse. China does not want a war in East Asia as it tries to take the top spot globally. It seeks cooperation.
