It was a prank because it's April Fools

Ha, no. however every April Games Magazine will make one prank article.

One year it was the invisible puzzle box, saying how popular it was, causing subscribers to call random toy stores asking for an invisible puzzle box that didn't exist.

Another year was about Shakespeare being a fraud and who really wrote the plays.

I won a Games T-shirt from a hidden contest like 10 years ago :3

Sadly I haven't found an archive of all the old magazines. Its how I got introduced to Puerto Rico.

I entered a few, but never won. =(

I have all my old issues somewhere. I might be able to get you some scans. though a lot of the puzzles are (half) done.

Clue #1: its fairly simple, no advanced deduction or logic really required. If you want that, play Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: youtube.com/watch?v=u-63xEB31dA

Tag because I want to know.

I focused a lot on the day planner and the time, but I wasnt able to figure out anything that made any sense. Theres two sets of scissors that I didnt really understand either.

I thought it was Bill Applegate, because he had an appointment at 7:30, it's already checked, and it's 7:50, so Tracy Higgins hasn't come yet.
I was wrong.

What do the clues on the desk represent? The only thing I can really tell is the planner with the names in it. So obviously it's one of those 3 names.

What clues point to Butler? I knew it was Butler or Applegate because it says no writing instrument was found at the scene, and both their names are checked off, so Higgins was eliminated.

The negative space between objects.

Ahh I see it now. Makes you wonder if he had all that time to do all that, why not just grab the planner with her name in it and cut her name out and hold it or something lol.

I see.

Why didn't he just write out the killer's name with his blood? All you gotta do is dip your finger into the stab wound and then start writing.

This magazine was from April 1994. later that year in another issue a fan wrote to the magazine about using the scissors to carve the name, or even the calculator to leave a note.

However if you have ever watched the 1977 film Sleuth, you'll know what lengths a pretentious puzzler will go through even towards death :)
