I've got a journalist in my Facebook who supports this law because she's interviewed a number of sex trafficking victims who were pimped through online means.

It's the same thing as with money laundering and cryptocurrency, you want to have a semi-analyzable blockchain to be able to catch bad actors one case at a time, by inviting them to leave permanent foot prints of their criminal activity on the online marketplace. Most of the OECD has seen the value in letting the thing exist and just trying to get as much meta-data as possible to decipher it.

This is a great opportunity for sex workers to get a new decentralized platform for aggregating demand and getting paid directly. There is a possibility that in the process this will ultimately make sex workers safer by making them seize the means of their income, and in the process insulate providers against threats of violence. It worked for drugs I don't see why it couldn't work here. Digitize the market, reduce violence, investigate bad actors, decriminalize grey actors.

This is doing more harm then good. It's akin to the gun debate, attempting to make everything illegal is only screwing over the ones who choose to do this safely. Forcing underage and sex slaves underground only serves to make them harder to find.

Once again, legalization INCREASES trafficking. You want MORE exploited people?

Legalization brings them out of the shadows and allows for testing to mitigate the spread of STDs.

Legalization allows things to be regulated and labor laws to be put into place for sex workers. It would essentially kill off the market for pimps and sex traffickers that kidnap or otherwise force women into working for them, and instead allow women to legally choose sex work if they wish, with legal safe guards in place to prevent them from being exploited and abused.

people do realize that many (most?) people in sex work aren't "choosing" to be in it. its not like most people are like hmm let me look up careers. hmm, this is the one i want.

people are forced into it. if its legal, people will still be forced into it. making it legal won't suddenly make people think, hmm i will get into this business myself! women and children will still be forced into it.

I think numbers could go up potentially. but at least there will be more regulation on whats going on in those situations. also lets be real, its not like the illegal market will be going away. once again, people who are being forced into it aren't going to have the option of just going legal. there's more profit for pimps to run their own operations than go through government bureaucracy. also, they can do more (different acts, younger girls/boys) in their illegal business, which will keep their markets alive. Also, potentially cheaper, because there aren't the layers of bureaucracy.

I think people who think legalization will get rid of illegal avenues / markets are naive. In fact, legalization will encourage illegal operations to do things that are more unsavory in order to corner markets that the legal business won't go into.

I like how our government has a habit of naming legislation after things it has no intention of doing.

Reminds me of people mistakenly calling SOPA the Stop Online Privacy Act, which would have been the real name of it if they were being honest about their intentions.
