this topic is stupid, and I highly doubt that the black community has anything to do with Troy's production or casting

This, and in addition, not only were the Greeks involved in trade in Africa but as far as I know, the series only depicts Achilles as black. More importantly, it's talking about a fictional period, not a historical reenactment. Not only do we not have evidence that it actually happened, but the 'historical account' actually includes the goddess of discord throwing apples at the other gods, a man who bathed in a hell river, and literal fucking eight-story horse (that's not to mention the sequel, which includes a cyclop, magic arrows, and fucking mermaids). So I'm not really sure how the fuck anyone could mistake this as a documentary in the first place.

Zeus is also black

Again, I don't think you can argue he was 'historically' anything.

You can most certainly argue the historical depictions of these characters which were most certainly never depicted as African.

If it's supposed to be a historically accurate thing then yeah it's pretty silly it'd be like having a sumo wrestler playing Jesus Christ.

I wonder if you guys here are mad about what Disney did to fairies and dwarves and folk tales in general.

Cinderella was butchered by Disney far worse than any "black washing" has ever done.

Nah man. Its only a problem for the usual suspects if a black person is involved

If Blade was cast white or Asian i would be just as upset. Certain characters do not need to be washed into anything other then what they were created to be. You can say what you want but i guarantee you if a black character became white there would be outrage.

People who say this dumb shit really dont understand the context behind a character like Blade and the context behind someone like Achilles. Its such a stupid comparison

What's the difference between Blade and Achilles?

Both of them need to be the way they are for the story to proceed without changes.

Because we have always done so by itself is not a reason to continue doing so.

Achilles is also historically depicted with a spear but if you give him a sword instead basically nothing is different. Achilles defining features include his long golden hair but his appearance is inconsequential to the role he performs in the story which is to kill Hector.

....The characters, for them to be the same characters they need to be the way they are.

Every adaptation will have changes, but a Goku isn't equal to a Cogburn in terms of film adaptations, one is still the character.

Achilles hides among young girls, because he's got long hair and is extremely pretty and it's why people like him. It's an essential part of his character to be like that. Just as for Blade to be the way he is.

There will always be changes, but one can change a story without changing a character, and that doesn't have to be a race change but appearance is a big thing. If a story depicting Jesus came out where he had short hair and no beard, people would rightfully be allowed to complain that he is deviating from the character they know.

So back to my question which spun out of control, what's the difference between Blade and Achilles that the poster mentioned?

Because as far as I can tell there isn't anything.

Achilles hides among young noble girls because of his fair hair and skin because he's so soft he appears womanly which actually attracts women to him.

Unless all of Greece becomes black that isn't happening.

And besides I don't know why they did race changes when they could have portrayed the Greeks as Greeks and the Turks as Turks.

It's already a war between two very different cultures.

Santa Claus?

You mean Saint Nicholas I assume. He was Greek, people often assume him of being something else due to living in Turkey, but he was pretty white and even North Africans are white anyhow.

The first descriptions of Jesus described him with long chestnut hair and lighter skin, there's a lot of evidence for those claims being bogus but there was a start.

DNA tests saying "some people around the area looked like x, therefore everyone in the region was x" is stupid.

They were both white.

Reeeing over a character's skin being a few shades darker or lighter than traditional depictions is complaining over Jon Bernthal playing Punisher.

I am not contending that is how he was described in literature. I'm contending that he needs to be fair skinned to appear feminine.

Not in Ancient Greece no. Pretty hard for a big buff black dude with short hair to hide amongst young noble Greek women.

You do know they can't even recognize Achilles on sight, right? Odysseus baits him into checking out a sword to figure out which "lady" he is.

Him appearing feminine is why so many women like him, and he's so adored because he's pretty.

So one.

Both of them are white, even in those depictions.

Number two, Santa Claus takes inspiration in appearance from the European Father Christmas, he isn't just St. Nicholas who helped out lower members of society.

Three, again do you know how those were done literally by "people in the Middle East looked like this" that's it.

But, again, it's not based on anything historical, and shows or interpretations are not restricted to rehashing the exact same depictions over and over. If they were, all the women should be played by men and the entire thing needs to be in ancient Greek.

Actually, he is also based on Odin. That means that all future depictions of Santa Claus need to have one eye, you know, otherwise, it's just pandering to two-eyed people.
