Well, every other Western democracy, the government negotiates drug prices. But that'd be "socialism" (even though most of those countries aren't socialist, and we have our own socialist programs like Medicare, but yeah...) so we can't have that!

It makes total sense that the drug companies can charge us whatever they want for the drugs without interference from that pesky government, while they benefit from the same government's interference in granting lengthy patents to give them a monopoly on it and to spend taxpayer money to go after counterfeiters and generics trying to get around said patents. It makes total sense! If a pharmaceutical company is bribing you...

They keep introducing new drugs every year. Of course since those drugs are all brand and not generic $$$$$.

Yay capitalism

In this country, insurance companies and the government (via medicare/aid) negotiate prices, which is exactly why those prices start grossly inflated, so that the price can be "negotiated" down to close to what would have been asked in the first place.
If I ask you for a dollar, and you insist that you're only paying 33 cents, you're getting charged three dollars next time.

Also we're essentially subsidizing the "negotiated" rates elsewhere.

Japan has about 3500 small insurance companies, instead of the three or four monolithic giants we have here.

We used to have countless small insurers, kinda, about a hundred years ago:

What's your point? The government and insurers negotiate down prices, but because they actually play on the side of the people, the price is actually brought down.

In any sensible negotiation you assess the actual value of the product and barter to that, you don't just try to get a discount on whatever nonsense they float your way.

The lab making the drugs does get paid in that case.
There's not a whole hell of a lot of difference between extorting individuals one at a time, and extorting everyone all at once.

Don't dick about with semantics. When free trials of food are given out, the chef and promoter are still paid, but we still understand it as free food.

Yes.
The chef gets paid, but the people eating it don't assume they have a right to free food.

People assume food on a tray being offered to them is free. If nobody offers then nobody expects but everybody sees cancer charities.

The "fix" would be approval reform, and maybe also patent reform.
Drug companies leak money on nay given drug waiting on the FDA to finally clear it for market, all the while eating away at the patent duration while doing so.

it shouldn't take upwards of a decade for pencil-pushers to finally decree that a new drug can finally be sold to patients who have probably already died in the interim.

If you are really looking to be triggered, watch the Valient episode of dirty money on Netflix.

Spoiler: buying the patent for drugs and raising the price 700% is a common practice that is still done to this day. Valient was just the most visible one due to Martin Shekrelli (sp) and his insane hubris.

You seem to assume that the practice is limited to just pharmaceuticals.

No, it is just one of, if not, the most insidious feats due to the industry.
