Wow.

Some of it's pretty fucking great.

Legitimately some of the best films ever made won Best Picture, like Amadeus or No Country for Old Men.

But also a lot of shit won Best Picture, looking at you Shakespeare In Love.

My favorite most recent winner was probably No Country For Old Men, but it just barely is no longer inside the decade.

I like Slumdog well enough though, and Shape of Water was really good, albeit not even my favorite Del Toro film. Spotlight and Moonlight are also both solid films, even though there were other films I would have preferred win.

I have seen all of those except for Spotlight and Shape of Water. I pick 12 Years A Slave, easily the most emotional movie I have ever seen. Knowing CE's nerdy taste it's obvious that Birdman would win.

Yeah thats one of the times when a big movie (as in, popular) really stands up well. My pick is Slum Dog but mostly for the soundtrack.

I've only seen Slumdog Millionaire and it was alright. Honestly, I'm so sick of Oscar-Bait that I just sort of ignore anything that even remotely smells of Oscar ambition. It's always the same; take some current social issue, wrap it in melodrama, attach some famous people, dole out a slow plot that moves like molasses, and end with some big moral lesson about how to solve the problem or what it means to be human or something vague and vapid like that.

Except for Shape of Water. That actually looks good. It might just be that I've never seen a Del Toro film I didn't enjoy.

Yeah, that one seemed a bit different too. I guess I shouldn't say that every Oscar winner is Oscar-bait shovelware, just that there is a certain genre of film that seems to be built, not on artistic merit, but as an attempt to buy an Oscar.

Guess I gotta go with Argo, since it's the only one I've seen all the way through. It did happen to be based on my favorite real-life espionage story, and Bryan Cranston delivered one of his best lines ever in it: 'We're a fucking spy agency and we don't know where the vice president is?!'

I need to give the Hurt Locker a viewing at some point, if for no other reason than I was super glad it shot down Avatar that year.

What?! No way, those films are all great.

If I had to pick just one for favorite, I guess Id go with The Shape of Water. Its so polished and a great twist of the old romance movies. Oh yea, its also vibrant... the colors, the designs, the characters, the suspense. It felt like watching a dream.

Really? I'd argue it's one of the strongest stretches the Oscars have had in a long, long time.

12 Years and Moonlight are my favorites from that list but none of those movies are lower than an 8/10 for me.
