Never got into Family Matters. Not even when I was a hardcore Sonic fanboy and I knew Steve Urkel used to voice Sonic.

Its not even the same premise outside of involving two black families. Easy no. Both were great shows that went on longer than their life span and got crappy towards their ending points.

Both were black sitcoms. Same genre; enough to warrant a comparison. They even had black manlets as the main comic relief characters (Carlton Banks in Fresh Prince, Steve Urkel in Family Matters).

LOL, quality is what determines whether or not something is a poor man's equivalent of something else, not release date.

Fresh Prince and Family Matters were in the same genre. Fresh Prince was swag; Family Matters was doo doo. Thus Family Matters was a poor man's Fresh Prince; normal people fucked with Fresh Prince whereas contrarians prefer Family Matters

They still had different premises. The only real common denominator was that both families were black. I mean if we are going this route arent 90% of family comedies the same?

It's not that they're the same; it's that Fresh Prince was good whereas Family Matters was poo poo. Thus Family Matters was a poor man's Fresh Prince.

Why are you even comparing those two shows? I always saw Family Matters as being more like the other TGIF shows like Full House or Step By Step than Fresh Prince.

I liked and watched both shows. I liked Fresh Prince more but I've never thought they were in competition with each other in any way.

Clearly. It was nothing like Fresh Prince, so it wasn't a "poor man's" anything.

They even had black manlets as the main comic relief characters (Carlton Banks in Fresh Prince, Steve Urkel in Family Matters).

...?

Steve was tall and could dunk a basketball.

I don't think Cosby Show was airing when Fresh Prince and Family Matters were. Cosby Show was in the 80s whereas the other shows were in the 90s. Dunno about Good Times, though; wasn't that 70s?

Cosby Show was irrelevant by the time the shows began, though; it was a washed up has-been way out of its prime. Fresh Prince and Family Matters were like the fresh, new kids on the block, so they weren't poor man's versions of Cosby Show. Cosby Show was the old man's version of those shows.

I never cared for Fresh Prince that much, and while I really enjoyed Family Matters I thought it was the weakest of the standard TGIF lineup (aside from Full House). I'm glad they usually started the night with Family Matters to make way for the better stuff (Boy Meets World)

Honestly I liked Hangin' With Mr. Cooper more than Fresh Prince

I guess you could say they're the same thing. Maybe its just how you look at it. When I think of spinoff I think of something like "Joey" or "The Cleveland Show" where the show revolved around that character and not just a passing reference to another show

I think I would define a spinoff more as a work that expands the focal scope of the original. Focusing on a minor character is one way to do it but for example Mega Man X doesn't have any shared characters at all* but clearly shares continuity.

*Well, it kinda does but not really.

It has nothing to do with being a rip-off. If something is the best in the genre, then everything else in the genre will be a poor man's version of that thing.

Fresh Prince = GOAT 90s black sitcom
Every other 90s black sitcom = poor man's Fresh Prince

I only singled out Family Matters because it seems the most popular 90s black sitcom after Fresh Prince.
