Clones?

It's a very popular series, it doesn't seem like a ton of work to make a game like it, there's definite room for improvements and twists on the gameplay.

Hell, I don't think I've ever seen a Sims clone

I imagine it'd be a lot harder to clone a game like the Sims without it feeling like a straight up ripoff, but some alternatives would be cool

I feel like that is super niche and would be hard to take business from The Sims. The only thing that they could use as an in is not having shitty dlc.

I remember EA or Maxis themselves trying to make a sort of spinoff or clone but more urban-themed. I think it was called the Urbz. Not quite what your looking for Im sure... but I thought it was a mildly interesting factoid.

Before the confusing starts, the handheld Urbz was a totally different type of game.

Yeah, I think the issue is that the Sims appeals to mostly casual players and casual players aren't going to hunt around for alternatives, they're just going to play the Sims.

I imagine simulation games are also somewhat difficult to make compared to some other genres.

then why do you think ea is so stupid with the amount of bugs in each release, you can only use ea incompetence as an excuse so much. if we're talking a clone on the level of 3, I think Spore had a precursor to the create-a-style you see in it with the way it textured user created content. you can see buildings/creatures render in untextured before it's applied, much in the same way of sims 3. I think that alone speaks to the complexity of the inner workings of the game when it borrowed from what was supposed to be the beginning of a new flagship IP.

on top of that you would've thought someone would've tried to make a harvest moon clone long before stardew valley, the gameplay seems basic enough, yet no one tried until then. I'd wager the game is a lot more complicated than meets the eye
